Navman Launches New S-Series

GPS pioneer Navman is redefining electronic navigation with the launch of its new S-Series, following a dramatic redesign of the company’s unique satellite navigation systems. During a year of extensive consumer research, Navman listened to both existing and potential customers.

What Navman found, perhaps not unsurprisingly, was that all consumers want a GPS system with richness of features, presented in an easy to use, simple and intelligent way. In response, Navman has redesigned its product range from the inside out.

With more than 500 enhancements to the range, adding style and security without compromising its simplicity, the four models in the S-Series range – the S30, S50, S70 and S90i – have been designed to accommodate both first time users looking for the basics and experienced GPS buyers looking for uncluttered depth.

Sony Ericsson W660i Review by 3G.co.uk

Another day, another Walkman phone. But has the latest W660i 3G music phone got anything in its design and feature locker to make you sit up and take notice? 3G finds out.

3G is incredibly fond of Sony Ericsson’s Walkman phone range, so we’re always thrilled to get our mitts on the manufacturer’s latest music handset. But lately the excitement has gone a tad flat. If you exclude the higher-end 8GB W960i and the HSDPA shake-control W910i slider, the recent additions to the Walkman clan have just been a case of refreshing previous handsets.

To put a spin on an otherwise familiar-looking handset, Sony Ericsson is billing the W660i as a ‘designer’ Walkman phone. Where the W880i broke the mould with its incredibly gossamer 9.4mm profile, the W660i sadly returns to the well-worn signature candybar format. However, it’s still quite trim at 14.5mm, is well constructed, handles beautifully and Sony Ericsson has introduced two coloured models to jazz up proceedings and appeal to a male and female audience. The Record Black model rocks up with a gold trim and a subtle circular pattern that mimics the grooves on a vinyl record.

The ladies model breaks the Walkman black/white/silver tradition and comes sprayed in a Rose Red veneer with an etched floral motif on the rear. These flourishes are obviously what give the W660i its designer tag

Apple Warns of iPhone Unlocking Programs

Apple has discovered that many of the unauthorized iPhone unlocking programs available on the Internet cause irreparable damage to the iPhone's software, which will likely result in the modified iPhone becoming permanently inoperable when a future Apple-supplied iPhone software update is installed.

Apple plans to release the next iPhone software update, containing many new features including the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store (www.itunes.com), later this week. Apple strongly discourages users from installing unauthorized unlocking programs on their iPhones. Users who make unauthorized modifications to the software on their iPhone violate their iPhone software license agreement and void their warranty. The permanent inability to use an iPhone due to installing unlocking software is not covered under the iPhone's warranty.

Could we finally have universal Phone Chargers?

The OMTP today announced that following industry consultation a recommendation paper has been agreed to help pave the way for a single, universal cross manufacturer USB (Universal Serial Bus) cable connector that enables mobile consumers to connect and charge their mobile devices.

Ratified and promoted by OMTP operator members with support from the USB Implementers Forum, this latest recommendation represents a significant step towards standardising common cable connectors resulting in obvious consumer and environmental benefits.

With UK consumers changing their handset on average twice a year, through contract upgrades or personal choice, there are literally hundreds of millions of chargers and data cables in circulation. On top of that, there a huge number of different peripherals such as headsets for voice calls, car kits, data cables, etc. – many with different physical connectors. This fragmentation creates unnecessary cost for the whole value chain, creates clutter and limits the freedom of selection for end user, and restricts competition by creating barriers of market entry.

The OMTP’s paper recommends that the micro USB (Universal Serial Bus) standard is used across mobile devices. USB is the de facto standard for the PC industry and it is a technology understood by consumers. Reaching mobile industry agreement on USB will help streamline the whole value chain and provide end users with a larger choice of the most popular peripherals. The customer will also be able to use their legacy home entertainment and PC equipment, as well as creating a new market opportunity for peripheral vendors.

"As the only independent music distributor 3 has licensed directly, we appreciate 3’s commitment to work with us and bring important non-mainstream music to UK customers.”

Google AdSense for Mobile unlocks the potential of the mobile advertising market

The mobile device is fast becoming the world’s most popular gateway to information. In fact, there are currently more mobile devices worldwide than personal computers and televisions combined.

As part of our ongoing efforts to develop new ways for users to find the information they need anytime and anywhere, Google announced today the availability of AdSense™ for Mobile, a program that contextually targets ads to mobile website content. AdSense for Mobile also allows AdSense publishing partners the ability to earn revenue from their mobile websites through the targeted placement of mobile text ads.

With this program, advertisers can connect with the growing number of mobile publishers, ultimately providing users with an enhanced mobile experience that helps them find what they are looking for more quickly and efficiently on the go. AdSense for Mobile is intended for AdSense partners who have created websites specifically for mobile browsers, and who want to monetize their mobile content via contextual advertising. Like Google's other AdSense products, mobile text ads run on an auction model. The system automatically reviews the content of publishers’ mobile websites and delivers text ads that are relevant to the websites’ audience and content. Publishers earn money whenever mobile users click on the ads.

With this new program, the unmatched reach of the Google content network is extended to the mobile platform. AdSense for Mobile provides a valuable way to connect mobile users with the right ad at the right time as they seek information on the go. AdSense for Mobile is now available to all mobile publishers in 13 countries worldwide.
AdSense for Mobile will be available in the following countries: US, England, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Ireland, Russia, Netherlands, Australia, India, China, and Japan (available in the coming weeks).

The Nokia 8600 Luna Review

Nokia’s high-calibre Luna slider is seen as the 8800 Sirocco for the everyman. Is it worthy of the luxury tag or is it just a poor man’s version? 3G checks it out.

The Nokia 8800 and its Sirocco successor are the ultimate in style over substance. Both stainless steel armoured handsets have shown favour with the poseurs, City boys and nouveau riche. The 8800 series has become a little too exclusive and wallet haemorrhaging for us more humble punters (check out the 18-carat gold Sirocco Gold model, which costs £450 on a £35 monthly contract or £800 SIM-free). So it’s good to see Nokia dropping its luxury range down to a more mainstream level in the guise of the Nokia 8600 Luna.

Carphone Warehouse is giving up this slider for free but on a £50 contract. This is still not cheap enough for some, but it’s a small price to pay for a slice of quality phone engineering.

Vodafone Offering Unlimited Music Downloads on 2.5G and 3G Handsets

Vodafone UK announced that customers will have unlimited access to over a million tracks from all the major record labels, as well as leading independents, on a range of new handsets for Christmas. This follows the launch of Vodafone Mobile Internet in June this year which brings the best internet brands and services to customers on the widest range of mobiles in the UK. This service has been highly praised by Mobile magazine who rated it the number 1 mobile internet service in a review in August 2007. Through an exclusive agreement with Omnifone, the UK based mobile music company, Vodafone will roll out their award-winning MusicStation, giving customers the ability to download tracks from Universal Music Group, Sony BMG Music Entertainment, EMI Music and Warner Music Group direct to their handsets, even while on the move.

Customers will be able to sign up for unlimited downloads from MusicStation for just £1.99 per week. The service will be easy to use on new Vodafone UK handsets as well as existing 2.5G and 3G mobiles, ensuring that most customers do not need to upgrade their phones to access tracks. Vodafone UK's new range of mobiles comprises models from many of the major brands allowing customers access to internet leaders including eBay, MySpace and YouTube on Vodafone Mobile Internet and the best in downloadable music. Vodafone UK-exclusive handsets include: the new Nokia N95 (8Gb) with its 5 mega pixel camera, the touch-screen activated Samsung F700, and the Sony Ericsson W910i (Havana Gold Design) with its 40Mb memory and innovative shake control, making it perfect for music lovers.

Payforit - An Unbeatable Mechanism For Mobile Purchases?

Mobile payment initiative, Payforit came into force across all mobile internet services and UK networks officially on September 1, 2007. The payment system was welcomed by the mobile industry; and now key operators, content providers and APIs (Accredited Payment Intermediaries) believe the future success of the initiative will rely on the developments made over the coming months.

Payforit was in development for nearly two years and I think that now we have created a clear user interface and single click payment method that will be a success and consumers will trust. I believe Payforit will dominate m-payments for some time to come, but it is by no means the finished product and further developments need to be made, which is something all operators and APIs are working to achieve over the coming months, explains Guillaume Peersman.

The next stage in the Payforit development process is to ensure that the standard is used not only in the off portal market but also on operator portals. For it to truly achieve its goal, the customer needs to see the standard payment screen wherever they buy content, be that on or off portal, said Jeremy Flynn, CEO of D2See.Currently, on portal content purchases still make up around 25% of the market, therefore it is very much an active area in purchasing content and needs to incorporate the Payforit standard to ensure the users buying experience is always the same.

Subscription services have been available on mobile for many years but the trust in them has diminished over time as customers are unclear as to what they will be charged, when and how. Phil Cooke, CTO at I-Play explains how Payforit could lead to the revival of mobile subscriptions: With Payforit taking over off portal buying, subscriptions are set for a rebirth as APIs now ensure consumers receive all the payment terms, including details of how to unsubscribe and helpline information at the time of purchase.

Sony Ericsson Launches New ‘Havana’ 3G Phones Exclusively with Vodafone

Sony Ericsson announced an exclusive colour range with Vodafone that combines both companies’ expertise in mobile music with a unique new style, labelled the Havana collection and finished in a stand-out Havana colour.

The chic family of mobile phones and accessories unveiled today by Sony Ericsson and Vodafone sets out to combine music with fashion. The new collection comprises exclusive colour variants of the popular W880i and W910i Walkman® phones, plus a colour-matched music accessory, the Portable Speakers MPS-70. The final addition to the collection is the Sony Ericsson V640i, a music-enabled phone available exclusively to Vodafone customers in selected markets*.

W880i Walkman® phone in Havana colour
The Sony Ericsson W880i Walkman® phone has become a style ‘must-have’ since its launch in early 2007. As Sony Ericsson’s slimmest phone to date at just 9.4mm thin, the W880i fits neatly into a handbag or pocket; not that you will want to keep it there with the stunning new Havana colour. Still able to store up to 900 full-length tracks on the 1GB Memory Stick Micro™ - that’s around 75 albums – this exclusive colour refresh adds further desirability to an already feature-packed phone.

W910i Walkman® phone in Havana Bronze
The new W910i is a 3G broadband (HSDPA) Walkman phone that is designed for entertainment; whether music, 3D games, video, or high-speed Web access. It is geared to let you choose your music, your way. Select Shake control and just flick the phone to control games or skip and shuffle between tracks. Or opt for SensMe™ and discover music to match your mood and tempo. The W910i is the ideal mobile music companion, and with the addition of the exclusive Havana treatment it is ideal for Vodafone customers who are looking for a great Walkman® phone with added style.

Sony Ericsson V640i in Havana Gold
The Havana collection is further extended by the launch of the Sony Ericsson V640i, exclusively available to Vodafone customers. The V640i is a music-enabled phone that offers high-speed 3G broadband (HSDPA) performance. As with the W910i Walkman® phone, the V640i offers Media Manager software***, making it straightforward to transfer music, photos, videos and more from PC to phone and vice versa.

Available in two rich colours or shades – Havana Gold and Quick Black - the Sony Ericsson V640i available exclusively with Vodafone provides a true music and entertainment experience. With support for Memory Stick Micro™ (M2™) up to 4 gigabytes – that’s up to 3600 full-length tracks – and a dedicated music key to help you navigate all of those songs, the V640i really can be your music library on-the-move.

The V640i is designed to appeal to music lovers looking for no-compromise performance. Weighing in at a pocket-sized 97grams, it delivers 3G Broadband (HSDPA) Web browsing on your mobile. It also means that it takes about 14 seconds to download a full-length music track**; up to four times faster than average on a 3G phone.

There’s no need to worry if you just can’t place a song that you hear on the radio. The V640i’s in-built TrackID™ feature lets you record a 5 second music clip – either by tagging it from the phone’s own FM Radio or from a nearby stereo – and then within seconds receive notification back of the song title, the artist and the album name. The TrackID™ music recognition software can then provide a direct link to the homepage of Vodafone’s Music Store for fast track download. Hear it, identify it and own it.

Sony Ericsson S500i Review

3G's 30 Second Decision

Having had the Sony Ericsson S500i in our mitts for 30 seconds we say ... a mid-range slider, but as a phone with style ambitions, the S500i doesn’t have the X-factor.

Back to nature

With the Walkman and Cyber-shot phones taking a back seat, Sony Ericsson indulges its design whims in the new range of style phones. The S500i slider is the first to flourish

It’s interesting to see Sony Ericsson concentrate fully on the more fashion-orientated side of the market. After bombarding us with Walkman and Cyber-shot phones, the manufacturer has resurrected its T-series along with the new S-series to showcase its designer side.

Of course, Sony Ericsson has dallied with the fashion world with mixed results, with the Z610i mirrored 3G clamshell and, let us not forget, injected the thin gene into the 9.4-inch thick gossamer W880i Walkman phone. But now it’s set to walk the style mile with a new trio of handsets including the metallic-hewn prepay Sony Ericsson T250i, the high-end candybar T650i and the S500i slimline slider.
