Sony Ericsson T650i Phone Review
Sony Ericsson Goes Back To Nature Sony Ericsson has gone back to the drawing board with its new T-series incarnation, the T650i, with the addition of 3G and a decent camera. But are we impressed?
Features
- 3.2-megapixel camera
- 3x digital zoom
- 3G
- PlayNow
Remember the Sony Ericsson T-series? If the very thought of the poor integrated camera or lack of 3G found on the T610 and T630 brings you out in a cold sweat, then fear not – Sony Ericsson’s new T-series descendant boasts all the features its slick design deserves.
The new T650i includes an impressive 3.2-megapixel camera complete with auto-focus, 3G and a 256MB MemoryStick Micro. It seems that Sony Ericsson has been biding its time in order to perfect the improved version. Available in Growing Green or Midnight Blue, both with a stainless steel veneer, Sony Ericsson has gone back to nature, claiming that the design is borne out of its love for the materials and colours found in the natural world. It all sounds a bit tree-lovey to us, but we can’t dispute the fact that both handsets look great.
Cleverly, the illumination effects on the keypad interact with the animated screen. As hollow squares drop down from the screen, bouncing as they hit the bottom, the keypad lights up as though the squares are continuing their fall. What’s more, the screen changes colour depending on what time of day it is. From 10am until 7pm the screen offers a forest green colour, before changing to turquoise and then a deep ocean blue from 9pm until 9am when it is followed once again by the turquoise. Apparently, the colours relate to the type of mood you should find yourself in during those hours.

Motorola RAZR 2 V8 Phone Review by 3G.co.uk
Sharper RAZR 2 Moto Motorola’s RAZR 2 V8 updates the familiar RAZR brand with a sharp new look, but is that enough to win consumers over? 3G.co.uk finds out.
With the release of the well-equipped Nokia N95 and the innovative, much-anticipated Apple iPhone, mobile manufacturers are having to make sure they’re not left behind. Following the success of its breakthrough handset, the RAZR V3 (a handset that continues to sell well even today), Motorola has launched its follow-up, the RAZR 2 V8.
Even the packaging of the V8 gives you the feeling you’re about to experience a well-groomed handset. Once you’ve pulled the golden ribbon, the V8’s box transforms, before popping up to reveal the shiny handset in all its glory. The phone looks fantastic with its glossy metal front finish and two-inch external screen. In truth, it’s not too dissimilar to its predecessor – although Motorola has managed to make it 2mm thinner – and this is not such a bad thing. The V8 has still got that slick feel we’ve come to love with the various RAZRs and, although 55mm wide, it surpasses most handsets and still fits neatly in your palm.
The V8 is a tough little cookie. The internal frame is made of stainless steel that makes it durable yet relatively light at 117g. And the exterior screen is made with chemically hardened glass, which is incredibly scratch resistant. Given its appealing shine, the handset is susceptible to grubby fingerprints on both the screen and the exterior.
Navigate This
Even for a Motorola novice, the V8’s navigation is simple. The large 2.2-inch internal screen, which has twice the resolution as the original RAZR, allows easy access to the applications, which are broken down into nine main headings. However, after a good half hour of searching, we can conclude that the IM Messenger function is not found on the V8, despite the phone’s manual saying otherwise. Tut-tut, Motorola.
Like most handsets, the V8 features a speed dial option, that allows you to store up to nine pre-set numbers, which can be activated with a single key. The V8 is fitted with CrystalTalk technology, that automatically adjusts the audio to ensure calls are clear and crisp, despite any noisy environment you may be in. It’s not flawless, but it works well and the voice-activated call function can pick up the command despite any unwanted background noise.
Bluetooth Your Pics
Where the V8 disappoints is with its feature set. The phone lacks 3G and the two-megapixel camera means the V8 ultimately falls short of some of the more equipped handsets. The camera itself has a multi-shot facility, that allows you to take up to eight consecutive pictures, while it is also possible to send a photo from your handset direct to a Bluetooth-enabled printer. The video recorder allows up to two hours of recording time, as well as a playback option.

LG KU990 Viewty 3G Phone Review
With a 5.1-megapixel camera, 3G HSDPA mobile broadband and a smart glossy finish, the LG Viewty is one of the biggest launches of the year. But can it live up to its promise?
Features
Like the more design-focused LG KE850 Prada, which launched earlier this year, the LG KU990 Viewty is a touch-screen handset with no keypad. However, while there are many design similarities between the two devices, the Viewty offers some significant breakthroughs in technology and usability. Let’s look at usability first, as this usually determines the ultimate appeal of a phone to the mass market.
Although they look the business, 3G.co.uk has long voiced the opinion that touch-screen phones can be difficult to use. The lack of a physical keypad means that you’re relying purely on the visuals to tell you if your intended contact with the handset has been registered. As a result, you can mis-type keys, tap a key twice, or neglect to tap anything altogether and it can prove to be an infuriating experience – especially if you are in a hurry. And who isn’t these days when they’re using their mobile?
Thankfully, the Viewty goes some way towards remedying that problem by providing a vibration response every time you touch a virtual key or command on the touch-screen. The phone vibrates very slightly to register that you’ve pressed a button.

Get Ready for Water-Powered Cell Phones
Samsung Electro-Mechanics has developed a micro-fuel cell and hydrogen generator that runs on water, writes the Chosun Ilbo.Oh Yong-soo, vice president of Samsung Electro-Mechanics' research centre, who said that when the handset is turned on, metal and water in the phone react to produce hydrogen gas.
Other fuel cells need methanol to produce hydrogen, while Samsung's needs only water.
Since the micro-fuel cell can generate up to three watts of electricity, it could be used in mobile devices. The new fuel cell could power a handset for ten hours, twice as long as rechargeable batteries. Oh Yong-soo said water-powered handsets are expected to hit the market by 2010.
In 2010 your mobile phone may be powered by water. Samsung Electro-Mechanics announced that it has developed a micro-fuel cell and hydrogen generator that runs on H20.
Since the micro-fuel cell can generate up to three watts of electricity, it could be used in mobile devices, the company said. The new fuel cell could power a handset for 10 hours, twice as long as rechargeable batteries.
Oh said water-powered handsets are expected to hit the market by 2010. "If the user uses the phone for four hours a day on average, they would have to change the hydrogen cartridge about every five days," Oh said. "Later handsets will be developed that don't need the hydrogen cartridges to be changed, and would only need to be filled with water."

Two New Nokia 3G 8800's Mobile Phones
Nokia unveiled a premium pair of handsets aimed at the most discerning and style-conscious consumers. The new Nokia 8800 Arte and Nokia 8800 Sapphire Arte bring 3G capabilities to the highly acclaimed Nokia 8800 series which features an elegant and sophisticated design theme that takes inspiration from nature and sets it apart from the crowd. "These two new handsets set the benchmark for quality and craftsmanship," says Heikki Norta, Senior Vice President, Mobile Phones, Nokia. "The high-end materials and seamless surfaces are pleasing to touch while the sophisticated, minimalistic design is equally satisfying to the eyes. An obsessive attention to detail means that the Nokia 8800 Arte and Nokia 8800 Sapphire Arte are engineered to last."
The Nokia 8800 Arte and Nokia 8800 Sapphire Arte combine elegant appearance and uncompromised functionality. On the surface, the seamless metal and glass body gives the Nokia 8800 Arte and Nokia 8800 Sapphire Arte an incomparable sense of style, while under the skin their hearts are driven by pure innovation. By tapping the steel surface below the display, an analogue clock appears - indicating time in its most classic form. Incoming calls on a Nokia Arte handset can be silenced gracefully with the "turn-to-mute" feature - allowing owners to quiet their phone inconspicuously by simply turning over the phone, screen-side down. Other state-of-the-art features include:
- Stunning 2.0" QVGA 240x320 pixels, OLED display with up to 16 million colors
- 3.2 megapixel auto focus camera with 8x digital zoom
- 3G capabilities
- 1 GB built in memory space
- MicroUSB all-in-one-connector
- Anti-fingerprint coating on metal and glass
Both the Nokia 8800 Arte and Nokia 8800 Sapphire Arte feature a high-end metal and glass composition, creating their classic, iconic style. A smooth slide mechanism - comprised of state-of-the art ball bearings and a unique spring mechanism - ensures each handset is a pleasure to touch and behold. The Nokia 8800 Sapphire Arte adds to the sense of exclusivity by further enhancing its polished steel case with a genuine sapphire gem stone and an accent of soft leather, creating an even more rich, sensual feel.
Continuing a tradition of incorporating exclusive soundtracks in its premium handsets, Nokia has invited the internationally-acclaimed master producers Kruder & Dorfmeister to add their standout musical style by creating a unique compilation for these new devices. Owners of the Nokia 8800 Arte and Nokia 8800 Sapphire Arte will be able to enjoy an exclusive videotrack and soundtrack composed by Kruder & Dorfmeister with visuals by Fritz Fitzke - adding an extra touch of sophistication and individuality to both handsets.
Each handset comes with an assortment of mobile accessories that further complement the exquisite experience of the Nokia 8800 Arte and Nokia 8800 Sapphire Arte. This includes the elegantly designed Nokia BH-803 Bluetooth headset with Active Noise Cancellation and touch sensitive volume adjustment. To add an element of sophistication and security, each handset comes with a leather pouch with a linen-lining and a separate matching desk stand.
