Nokia 7900 Prism Review by 3G.co.uk

A Mobile Phone With A Different Angle

There are two phones currently in the Nokia Prism series. These are the 7900 and the 7500. The main difference is that the 7900 has 3G and Quad-Band GSM whilst the 7500 is a Tri-Band GSM handset.

In terms of size the 7900 is a bit smaller in depth ( by 3.4mm ) but a bit larger in length ( by 2mm ) and a little wider in width. ( 1mm ). For the purpose of this review we will concentrate on the 3G enabled Nokia Prism 7900.

Nokia announced the Nokia Prism collection of mobile phones in August 2007 with an anticipated launch date of December of the same year. The Prism range is squarely aimed at style conscious consumers looking to be different and those who wish to be at the forefront of new designs.

Make no mistake, the Nokia Prism range will definitely standout this Xmas as they have cutting-edge colors, materials and graphics. The diamond-cut prism design with its sharp angled lines, geometric patterns and graphic light-refracting colors take it towards the “wow” zone. It is available in liquorice black and has an aluminum backcover, which is coin-stamped and laser-etched to co-ordinate with the rest of the phone.

O2 announces O2 Wallet

O2 announced the launch of the UK's first large scale pilot of NFC (Near Field Communications) technology on mobile phones.

The trial of the O2 Wallet® paves the way for the mass
market use of mobile phones to pay for purchases, access events or
even be used as Oyster cards for travel around London, simply by
touching the phone to a reader.

"Research shows that people are more likely to return home if they
leave their phone behind than their wallet or keys," said Cath Keers,
Customer Director, O2 UK. "So why not have your wallet on your phone?
We believe that NFC technology is going to fundamentally change the
way people use their mobile phones."

The trial, which will involve over 500 people invited from the O2
customer base, takes place across selected sites throughout London
and begins on 28th November 2007 running for six months until the end

Nokia N81 Review ( 8GB ) by 3G.co.uk

Nokia N81 Review ( 8GB ) by 3G.co.uk

One of the obvious perks of writing reviews for 3G.co.uk is that we get the low-down on the best new phones long before they actually hit the high street.

However, as we get to see and hear all about these shiny new gadgets many months before they land, it's almost impossible to avoid having a pre-conceived opinion of a phone's look and feel long before we ever get to actually get to grips with it.
Because of their incredible feature sets, the launch of any new Nokia Nseries phone is a major event. We were particularly excited about the Nokia N81 8GB because - in addition to its superb apps and features - the phone looks wonderful in all the press shots. It's certainly the most attractive Nseries phone to date.

Unfortunately, we have to admit to feeling mildly deflated when we unwrapped our shiny new N81 8GB because it's finished in a black plastic casing that creaks when you squeeze it and is a sucker for attracting nasty fingerprint smudges.

Still, if you want a phone that excels in music, games and clever multimedia trickery, the N81 8GB is up there with the best. However, the same can be said of the new Nokia N95 8GB.

And herein lies our main issue with the N81; it's always going to be compared to the Nokia N95 8GB, which is 12g lighter and offers users the same benefits as the N81 8Gb, as well as HSDPA, a better camera and lens and built-in GPS for navigation.

Sony Ericsson K770i Review by 3G.co.uk

3G's 30 Second Comment

The Sony Ericsson K770i is another top ranking Sony Ericsson mobile phone but how does it stack up against the Cybershot range ?

Sony Ericsson K770i Review by 3G.co.uk

Even assuming you know next to nothing about the latest mobile phones, it's often easy to gauge a new handset's prowess, performance and - ultimately - price tag, by the design and engineering expertise invested in its packaging.

While low-budget phones often land softly at 3G.co.uk, discreetly encased in a small, drab box bearing little more than the manufacturer's logo and the model number, top-of-the-range handsets arrive in a blaze of glory with a fanfare of PR and extravagant glossy packaging that's often large enough to contain a household pet.

Not so the Sony Ericsson Cyber-shot K770i. Its packaging is positively nondescript when compared with designer phones like the LG Prada or the new Samsung/Bang & Olufsen Serenata. Fortunately for us, in this case, Sony Ericsson has spent less time on the packaging and more on the handset. And the result is one of the finest all-round specimens on the market today.

In fact, while Sony Ericsson's other new Cyber-shot, the K850i, possesses a better camera, for all-round appeal, we actually think the K770i just edges it.

Sonic The Hedgehog Part 1 Mobile Game Review

Sonic The Hedgehog Part 1

It's fair to say every successful games console has at least one character identified with it. For Nintendo, Mario has been ever-present. Sony's PlayStation gave Lara Croft a leg-up into mainstream culture. And Sega? Well, back in the day when Sega still made consoles, its mascot was a spiky-haired hedgehog named Sonic. And, unlike Mario, he's come to mobile.

For those who never played the original, here's the gist. Sonic has to leg it - he's as fast as his name suggests - through a series of colourful platform levels, bouncing on enemies, collecting rings and avoiding being squashed flat by oncoming trucks. Okay, maybe not that last one.

iFone has done an excellent job of bringing the Sonic that millions know and love from Sega's Megadrive console to mobile. The game features three 'zones' from the original - Green Hill, Marble and Spring Yard - with a sequel planned for later in the year. The graphics are excellent, and certainly faithful to the original game. More importantly, the speed has also survived the transition - at least on the Nokia N70 we reviewed the game on. You can tear through the levels at top speed without worrying that the game's scrolling won't be able to keep up.

However, the speed is our one quibble with mobile Sonic. Depending on which handset you're using, it may cause you problems. If your buttons are too close together or you have a rubbish navigation key, you may have problems controlling Sonic at full whack, leading to some untimely deaths. So if your handset's not great, you'll need to take things slow.

If you loved Sonic the first time around, this will have you wallowing in nostalgia. More importantly, even if you thought a Megadrive was a feature on the new Nissan Micra, mobile Sonic has enough character, speed and downright fun to get you hooked on the 'hog in seconds.

Sony Ericsson W910i Review by 3G.co.uk

3G's 30 Second Comment

The first Walkman with 3G HSDPA. This is gonna be downloading heaven.

Sony Ericsson W910i Review by 3G.co.uk

As many of our loyal readers will be aware, while 3G.co.uk remains a big fan of Sony Ericsson's Walkman range, we can't help but it they could do with a bit of a revamp. Well, it would appear that the manufacturer takes our reviews on board as it has promptly brought out the new Sony Ericsson W910i, complete with HSDPA and a 'shake control' function.

Sony Ericsson W910i Features
- Walkman 3.0 player
- Shake Control
- SensMe
- HSDPA
- PlayNow

Design wise, Sony Ericsson has reverted back to the slider-style handset à la the W850i. While the slide action is smooth and responsive, it could do with a tad more movement, as the top half of the phone can interfere slightly when trying to gain access to keys one to three.

We notice that Sony Ericsson has omitted the 'back' button that has been such a mainstay for the majority of its handsets. Instead, you now use the top right soft key to move back to the previous option, which is still perfectly straightforward.

Available in Noble Black or Hearty Red, the W910i is impressively light at a mere 86g. When closed, the keys on display include a navigation key that doubles up as the media player's control pad. Also found are the call and end keys, the activity menu key, the clear key and two selection keys that are used to select a command.

Samsung U700 Phone Review by 3G.co.uk

3G's 30 Second Comment

The U600 had no 3G but the newer U700 has 3G and even faster HSDPA. That surely makes it a no brainer ?

Slick Slim Samsung

The mirrored exterior and bright 256,000-colour display coupled with its slick ultra-slim build make the Samsung U700 extremely easy on the eye. The actual phone we reviewed was the U700V ( Vodafone model ).
However, its smart appearance also makes it susceptible to the odd finger smudge. The sliding mechanism feels secure, but as with its predecessor, the U600, the touch-sensitive soft keys are an acquired taste. Samsung has added a specified note to each key (when played from one to 10, it plays a scale) to indicate a key press, but the tones are downright irritating and you’ll soon be switching to silent.

3G HSDPA Included

For those with an observant eye, you may also notice that the U700V is slightly thicker than the U600, albeit a mere 1mm, and a whole 5g heavier. Having maintained its super-slim appearance, the U700V also boasts additional HSDPA – the U600 didn’t even manage 3G. Subscribe to Mobile TV and the U700V’s on-board HSDPA will allow you to enjoy fast, high-quality streaming.

The soft key on the right-hand side of the fascia when in idle mode takes you directly to Vodafone Live!.

Sony Ericsson K850i Phone Review

3G's 30 Second Comment

5 Megapixel Cyber-shot mobile phone from the Sony Ericsson stable. But is it a photographer's dream machine?

Cyber-Shot Heaven

Sony Ericsson’s Cyber-shot range has long been at the sharp end of the mobile camera phone revolution. The manufacturer has been in no rush to add to the resolution to put its Cyber-shot devices on a par with five-megapixel powerhouses, such as the Nokia N95 and the Samsung G600. Until now, that is.

On paper, the new five-megapixel K850i Cyber-shot has all the specs to put it right at the top of the camera phone pile, but what’s the reality? Marginally smaller than the K810i, the K850i actually boasts a slightly larger screen than its predecessor. When active, the phone looks great with both the screen and the somewhat ‘different’ keypad (more of which later) brightly illuminated. Despite its smaller body, the K850i is a good deal heavier than the K810i. And in our opinion, it’s uglier. We’re not convinced by the aesthetics or the plastic finish. However, Sony Ericsson has succeeded in making the K850i feel more like a digital camera than a mobile phone.

Nokia 6500 Slide Phone Review by 3G.co.uk

COR BLIMEY - Two Nokia 6500's

Quite why the two Nokia phones currently residing in the 6500 series share a name is something of a mystery to us, and you only have to see the two sitting side by side to understand why. To bring you up to speed, there are currently two handsets in the 6500 range: the Nokia 6500 Slide (reviewed here) and the Nokia 6500 Classic ( reviewed by 3G soon )

Aside from the fact that both are mid-range 3G handsets finished in a metal composite, it’s hard to find many features that the phones share – it’s certainly not looks or features.

Nokia’s explanation is that both phones ‘are contemporary designs based on a similar design inspiration’. The manufacturer admits that both ‘feature real metal construction and a similar level of advanced technology engineering to appeal to a mass market audience’.

So there you have it. But despite our reservations about the common label, we have to admit that both are jolly nice phones. We’ve opted to review the 6500 Slide first because, although it’s the least attractive of the two, it houses the more sophisticated feature spec.

Features
- 3.2-megapixel camera
- Carl Zeiss optics
- 3G
- TV out function for sharing images and videos

Google Steers Itself Into the Mobile Phone Arena

A broad alliance of leading technology and wireless companies joined forces to announce the development of Android, the first truly open and comprehensive platform for mobile devices. Google Inc., T-Mobile, HTC, Qualcomm, Motorola and others have collaborated on the development of Android through the Open Handset Alliance, a multinational alliance of technology and mobile industry leaders.

Through Android, developers, wireless operators and handset manufacturers will be better positioned to bring to market innovative new products faster and at a much lower cost. The end result will be an unprecedented mobile platform that will enable wireless operators and manufacturers to give their customers better, more personal and more flexible mobile experiences.

Thirty-four companies have formed the Open Handset Alliance, which aims to develop technologies that will significantly lower the cost of developing and distributing mobile devices and services. The Android platform is the first step in this direction -- a fully integrated mobile "software stack" that consists of an operating system, middleware, user-friendly interface and applications. Consumers should expect the first phones based on Android to be available in the second half of 2008.

The Android platform will be made available under one of the most progressive, developer-friendly open-source licenses, which gives mobile operators and device manufacturers significant freedom and flexibility to design products. Next week the Alliance will release an early access software development kit to provide developers with the tools necessary to create innovative and compelling applications for the platform.

Handset manufacturers and wireless operators will be free to customize Android in order to bring to market innovative new products faster and at a much lower cost. Developers will have complete access to handset capabilities and tools that will enable them to build more compelling and user-friendly services, bringing the Internet developer model to the mobile space. And consumers worldwide will have access to less expensive mobile devices that feature more compelling services, rich Internet applications and easier-to-use interfaces -- ultimately creating a superior mobile experience.
