Sony Ericsson W960i Review by 3G.co.uk

One of Sony Ericsson's major triumphs in recent times has been its success in reviving the flagging Walkman music brand and reinventing it for a new generation of younger, hipper mobile users.

Just as the manufacturer draws on its Cybershot brand in the camera space, Sony Ericsson's ability to distinguish a new music phone with the globally recognised Walkman logo is a tremendous brand advantage.

However, almost 30 years on from the launch of the first Sony Walkman cassette player, the thought of being restricted to just one album's worth of songs accessible from your music device at a time is now unthinkable. And, just to emphasise the chasm between the 1979 Walkman and the 2008 version, Sony Ericsson's new W960i Walkman phone lets you store up to 700 albums thanks to 8GB of built-in storage.

But, while bumper storage capacity is undoubtedly one of the key assets of any modern music device, it isn't everything, and every new Sony Ericsson Walkman phone is under pressure to live up to the high spec music pedigree that the Walkman range now epitomises.

As a result, the launch of the W960 Walkman phone has been met with huge anticipation and expectation. And, because they were first announced at the same time, it's natural to compare the new W960i Walkman with the W910i Walkman.

Both handsets are at the premium end of the Walkman range and are priced accordingly. But, as is always the case with technology, each handset has its own distinct assets and foibles.

For example, the W910i offers HSDPA broadband data speeds, a lightweight chassis, beautiful slider action and a fabulous user experience, but suffers from a fairly bog standard two megapixel camera and less in-built memory. Whereas the W960i is a larger, heavier candy bar phone running 3G data speeds, but offers Wi-fi, a 3.2 megapixel camera and a huge 8GB memory as standard.

So, on paper at least, there would not seem to be much between them. However, we found the W910i to be a far superior handset.

Samsung F700 Review by 3G.co.uk

There's no going back. We're now living in a world with the iPhone. It's going to influence every phone from now on; in fact, it already makes a lot of handsets look out of date.

Such is the case with Samsung's new smartphone, the F700. If we had seen it a few months back, the 3G verdict would have been, ‘an impressive, powerful smartphone'. Now, in comparison to the iPhone, the touch-screen user interface is unresponsive and awkward.

Samsung F700 vs Apple iPhone

The F700 is a great-looking phone, but it does look a little like a low-rent iPhone. The screen is large, but although it's as tall as the iPhone's, it's not as wide and the resolution is significantly lower.

The F700 is also chunkier due to the additional slide-out QWERTY keyboard. However, this is where the F700 trumps the iPhone. You see, the iPhone's small virtual keyboard is not ideal for typing messages and emails. Touch-screens are tricky for typing because there's no physical travel, and with the iPhone there's a further restriction because you can only type text messages in portrait format, instead of landscape where the keypad is bigger. On the F700, the small but exceptionally comfortable QWERTY keyboard comes into its own and is ideal for typing lengthy messages and emails.

If you do want to use the F700's virtual phone keypad to dial a number, it vibrates when you touch the screen which makes for a more satisfying press, although you'll probably find you prefer to use the QWERTY keyboard for faster typing.

3 Skypephone Review by 3G.co.uk

According to the top mobile manufacturers and operators, mobile users are on the verge of a social networking revolution, with household names like YouTube, Facebook and Skype set to become as easy to access from our handsets as they are from our PCs and Macs.

Of all of these technologies, most experts agree that a voice over IP (VoIP) service like Skype is the most likely to make the transition from PC to mobile successfully because it is a telephony based service based predominantly around voice and text. The advantage being that it can prove a lot cheaper than the service you currently enjoy from your operator, especially for overseas calls and messaging ‘chats'.

Services like YouTube and Facebook on the other hand are photo and video led services that, like A-list movie stars, really look their best on the bigger screen. That said, few technology lovers would be too disappointed to find any of these applications embedded on their 3G handsets.

Which is exactly what you get with 3's Skypephone.

To find that the Skypephone offers Skype is, of course, no shock. But you may be pleasantly surprised to find that the handset also gives you one-click access to Google, Yahoo Search, Windows Live Messenger, Facebook, YouTube, Mobilcast and eBay.

Symbian S60 2nd Edition Users Beware

A new worm has been identified that affects Symbian S60 2nd Edition Phones.

The worm , known as Besola, spreads through the use of MMS and Bluetooth. The devious thing about the work is that it works by pretending to be a picture , audio or video file rather than an SIS application file.

The currently know filenames being used to spread the virus are beauty.jpg , sex.mp3 and love.rm .

All Symbian users should never allow an image file or audio file to be given installation permissions, as these files have no need to install.

This should prevent the worm appearing on your phone.

iPhone sales fall short of O2 target

Sales of Apple's much-hyped iPhone in the UK have fallen just short of the expectations of O2, the mobile operator that is the exclusive network for the handset.

O 2 said shortly before the iPhone's UK launch on November 9 that it expected handset sales of 200,000 in the first two months, but people familiar with the situation said the actual figure for the first eight weeks was about 190,000.

Some analysts, who had regarded the original 200,000 prediction as a conservative estimate, added that Apple may have to cut the iPhone price in the UK if it wants to maintain sales momentum.

The iPhone's headline price is £269 but customers must also take out an 18-month contract starting at £35 per month, which means the minimum outlay is £899.

O 2 declined to comment on iPhone sales figures, but said it was "delighted with the response to the iPhone, which has seen unprecedented levels of customer satisfaction". It also confirmed the iPhone was its fastest-selling handset ever "by a significant margin".

In November, Matthew Key, incoming chief executive of O 2 Europe, said he expected about 200,000 iPhones to be sold in the UK in the first two months. As well as O 2 and Apple, the iPhone is sold by Carphone Warehouse.

However, Gartner, the research firm, said in November that 350,000 to 400,000 iPhones could be sold in the first eight weeks.

Carphone and Apple yesterday declined to comment on iPhone sales figures.

iPhone sales had been strong in the run up to Christmas, but had subsequently tapered off, according to people familiar with the situation.

O2 and Vodafone in 3G Ofcom row

Vodafone and O2 have attacked Ofcom's plans to seize part of the radio spectrum they have used since the 1980s to provide mobile phone coverage, and sell it to their rivals for third generation mobile services.

O2 estimated the plan would cost it pounds 4bn in profits as a result of the forced migration of their customers to 3G. It predicted most of that would be passed on to customers as higher bills.

Vodafone said Ofcom had made its decision "based on a hypothetical and fanciful version of the future''.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 Mobile Game Review

Pro Evolution Soccer 2008

You wouldn’t expect classic footy sim Pro Evolution Soccer to transfer to mobile with any semblance of its console glory, but the fact that it does is a huge achievement. You can play individual matches, compete in leagues and cups, and take on a Super Challenge league mode.

What’s more, there are two control systems – a standard one, and a One Touch option, with the latter boiling all the actions down to the ‘5’ button, to make it easier to play for mobile gaming novices. It’s an excellent inclusion.

Maria Sharapova Becomes Face of Sony Ericsson

Sony Ericsson has signed an exclusive four year sponsorship agreement with female tennis player, Maria Sharapova, to become the company’s first global brand ambassador.

The stunning and talented Russian, who turns 21 in April this year, will undertake a series of innovative new consumer brand campaigns specifically designed to engage Sony Ericsson’s core target audiences and to utilise Maria away from the tennis court.
Maria will also be working with Sony Ericsson’s design team on a range of products and accessories.

The off-court agreement complements Sony Ericsson’s 6 year $88 million global title sponsorship of the WTA Tour which was signed in January 2005 and is the biggest deal in the history of women’s sport. Sony Ericsson’s commitment to women’s tennis has energised the game by bringing fans closer to the experience and taking the sport to new audiences through cutting edge initiatives like night tennis – a fusion of tennis, fashion, music and dance.
Commenting on today’s announcement, Dee Dutta, Corporate Vice President and Head of Marketing at Sony Ericsson, said: “Now in our seventh year as a company, the brand has evolved significantly and securing a global brand ambassador is a natural progression to take our brand to the next level in an increasingly competitive market place.”

“Maria’s iconic status, determination, dynamism, success and charm match strongly with the Sony Ericsson brand, which prides itself on innovative and cool design with substance.”
“Our alignment with Maria’s global iconic status, combined with our brand expertise and innovative thinking aims to provide something new and something different to our customers around the world.”

Maria Sharapova added, “It is really exciting to be working with a cool brand like Sony Ericsson which has such a strong reputation in the entertainment industry”

“Even though most people know me as a tennis player, I have so many passions beyond the sport like fashion, music, film and design; which Sony Ericsson and I are going to be exploring together through our partnership.”

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back Mobile Game Review

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back

The Empire Strikes Back was the best Star Wars film, which is why we’re so glad it has come to mobile in a fun and playable incarnation.
The game has seven levels, each based on a key scene from the film, so you’ll be racing a snow speeder, dodging meteors in the Millennium Falcon, and swiping at Darth Vader with a lightsabre.

It looks good, and is great fun to play, even if some of the levels lack depth. Feel the Force.

Free WiFi for T-Mobile Broadband customers

Calculate your affect on climate change on your phone

mobGAS is a new mobile phone application available in 21 European languages that allows users to see how their daily choices are impacting on climate change. This smart technology is fun to use, offers practical tips and demonstrates to users that climate change is not just a distant issue for others to tackle, but something that they too can really influence.

Although easy to download and use, mobGAS is a sophisticated application that calculates an individual's emissions of the three main greenhouse gases - carbon dioxide CO2, methane CH4, and nitrous oxide N2O.

It does so by compiling basic information inputted by the user on, for example, how they regulated their heating, what means of transport they took or the household appliances they used. Calculations of individual emissions of greenhouse gases can be accessed by users at the touch of a button at any time of the day. A users-diary of daily, weekly and yearly emissions can be securely registered on a dedicated website that allows them to compare their results with other country or world averages. The application also includes an animation reflecting the user's contribution to the Kyoto Protocol target.

In order to download the mobile application you need to access, from your mobile device, to a web browser and enter the following URL:

FlyTunes launch personalised radio for your iPhone

FlyTunes Inc. demonstrated its new digital music service for the Apple iPhone, iPod Touch and other portable media players and cell phones. The FlyTunes service offers users a personalized radio-like experience, with thousands of channels of digital music that can be enjoyed anywhere they go, regardless of wireless connection.

FlyTunes outshines satellite radio in a number of ways:

-FlyTunes does not require a receiver or additional hardware purchase; it works with the cell phone or personal media player already in a consumer’s pocket.
-FlyTunes offers access to over 100 times more channels than satellite radio, covering every conceivable musical taste.
-FlyTunes plays everywhere, unlike satellite radio, which does not work inside buildings, or on planes.
-FlyTunes allows users to personalize their music channels. While listening, users can promote favorite songs and flag unwanted ones (never to be played again).
-There are no setup or monthly fees for FlyTunes.

FlyTunes allows users to create their own customized music channels by searching over 20,000 Internet radio stations to find music that matches their preferences. Hours of personalized music can be cached to a portable media player or cell phone and listened to anywhere. Portable devices with 3G capability can quickly cache additional music, greatly reducing battery drain.

FlyTunes works with Macintosh or PC computers, and will be widely available on January 21, 2008 at the FlyTunes.fm web site.
FlyTunes works with all Apple iPods, including the iPhone, and iPod Touch, Microsoft Zune, and all other popular media players supporting MP3 files, as well as multimedia-enabled cell phones.

iPhone Audio recognition available as a free beta

iPhone software that recognises tracks for you , by sampling the music for 5 seconds and then connecting to an ID server has been launched.

This can enable you to identify music from any source including radio, which can be very helpful as there isn't anything more infuriating than hearing a song you like and being unable to find out the artist and the song title.

The application is in beta and can be downloaded free from here.

New Motorola ROKR E8 Music Phone

Motorola expanded its ROKR family of music products with the introduction of the ROKR E8 mobile device at CES.

Using breakthrough ModeShift technology from Motorola, the quad-band GPRS/EDGE device presents users with only the controls they need, at the time they need them, instantly transforming from music player to phone with the touch of a button.

When powered off, the surface of ROKR E8 is smooth, with no visible keys. Power on the device and it presents a virtual numbered keypad on the front surface. With one “press” of the virtual music key, the phone keypad disappears and control keys for the music player – play, pause, fast forward and rewind – appear in its place.

ROKR E8 also marks the debut of the new FastScroll navigaton wheel from Motorola, a variable-speed touch control that lets consumers easily scroll through all of the content stored on the device. With a gentle slide of the thumb, the wheel quickly scrolls through your music (music mode), contacts (phone mode), calendar (phone mode), or multimedia (imaging mode) content. Information is easily viewed on the landscape 2.0” QVGA display.

The Missing Sync For iPhone

Mark/Space, Inc. announced the immediate availability of The Missing Sync for iPhone. The Missing Sync for iPhone helps migrating smartphone users switch to the iPhone, and enhances current iPhone users' synchronization features. Now SMS, call logs and notes data will no longer be trapped on the iPhone.

Migration made easy

The Missing Sync for iPhone supports migration from most smartphones using Palm OS, Windows Mobile or BlackBerry OS. The Migration assistant is a step-by-step utility that makes getting contacts, calendars and phone camera photos a simple task. Even if users never synced with their Macs before, The Missing Sync for iPhone makes it easy to transfer data from the old phone and load the information onto the iPhone in minutes.

1001 uses

The iPhone keeps only 1000 SMS messages, both incoming and outgoing, which means at some point users will start to lose older information. But The Missing Sync for iPhone collects that data so messages are safe no matter how prolific a texter you are. It also lets users view and search the SMS messages in a threaded view on their Mac, just like on the iPhone.

You rang?

Incoming calls aren't always from people in the address book, and often they're useful numbers to have. Syncing the call log means users can browse new contact numbers and add the useful ones to the Address Book on the Mac. It also means that incoming, outgoing and missed calls are logged, which is great for business users that need to keep track of costs. Need to claim expenses for that hour-long business call to Paraguay? No problem, just check the call log.
A note about notes

The Notes application on the iPhone is a useful scratch pad for ideas, plans and to-do lists. But often those notes are more useful elsewhere, perhaps with other notes you have on your computer. The Missing Sync for iPhone will sync the iPhone notes, so you can read them in Microsoft Entourage, Yojimbo from Bare Bones Software, or Mark/Space N
