Sony Ericsson W890i Review by 3G.co.uk

Sony Ericsson W890i Review by 3G.co.uk

Having been announced back in November last year, it has been a long time coming, but the Sony Ericsson W890i has finally landed. 3G has eagerly awaited the latest addition to the popular Walkman range, but will the W890i prove to be a cut above the rest, or just another music phone?

With its petite frame and supreme music capabilities, we were big fans of the uber-slim Sony Ericsson W880i and, thankfully the W890i flaunts some exciting new flourishes without sacrificing the original's crowd-pleasing style.

Now with HSDPA, Google Maps, a 3.2-megapixel camera and a bundled 2GB memory card, the W890i packs more features than its predecessor, while keeping its svelte appearance. Available in espresso black, mocha brown or sparkling silver, the metallic casing gives the handset a robust feel, despite only weighing in at 78g.

There's also a really useful battery cover lock, operated by two switches on either side of the handset, which both make it easy to remove the battery cover and adds to the secure and reliable feel of the phone. Flick the switches and the back cover gently pops out. It's a beautifully simple idea that means you won't be chipping your fingernails attempting to dislodge the rear casing, as is the case with so many handsets.

Devil May Cry: Dante's Awakening - Mobile Game Review

Devil May Cry: Dante's Awakening Review

It’s an impressive 3D title based on the spooky console game of the same name. It’s got monsters, demons, and a suitably brooding hero by the name of Dante. What’s not to like?

Controlling Dante, with a choice of sword or guns, is kept simple and intuitive. Like the Resident Evil games, you choose a path in the game, allowing you to come back and replay to see the bits you missed. Best of all, it looks ravishing, and shows off your handset’s gaming capabilities perfectly.

Blackberry Pearl 8110 Review by 3G.co.uk

Blackberry Pearl 8110 Review by 3G.co.uk
The launch of Research In Motion’s (RIM) BlackBerry Pearl range represented a real change in direction for the manufacturer, bringing a neat candybar design along with a clever text entry system called SureType. The third entry into the Pearl stable, the Vodafone-exclusive 8110, also comes with built-in GPS.

BlackBerry Pearl 8110 QWERTY keyboard

When we first came across SureType, we were unsure what to think; however, we’re now on our third such device and have mastered the art, tapping out emails and texts as quick as a flash. The great benefit of this key-sharing system is that the Pearl 8110 is small, which makes it a convenient smartphone to carry around.

BlackBerry Pearl 8110 small screen

The down side is that the 8110’s screen is fairly cramped. If you browse the web regularly then this won’t be the device for you; the small screen just isn’t up to that kind of task. In fact, with no 3G and just tri-band GSM and GPRS, web browsing isn’t as fast as we’d hoped. There’s no Wi-Fi either, so you can’t hop onto a local network when you want ultra-fast browsing.

BlackBerry Pearl 8110 - getting from A to B

Vodafone has teamed up with sat nav provider Telmap to provide one year’s free service with the Pearl 8110. Telmap is an ‘off-board’ system, so the phone requests information from it over the air as needed. This has its advantages as data is always up to date, but try to plan a trip from a location where you don’t have a phone signal and you will find yourself out in the cold.

Samsung i640v Review by 3G.co.uk

Samsung i640v Review by 3G.co.uk The Vodafone-exclusive Samsung i640V may not be the best-looking Windows Mobile smartphone we’ve ever seen. Its silver, grey and black colour scheme and flat front fascia is attractive, but the bulk of the device is hard to ignore.

However, we can forgive the size of the i640V for two reasons. Firstly, underneath its slider mechanism is a full QWERTY keyboard.

The keys are tall and thin, and are angled away from an imaginary line that runs down their centre. We found them comfortable to use for tapping out texts and email. Secondly, the i640V comes with two batteries, and one of them is pretty bulky. In fact, the device comes with two backplates, enabling you to use the thinner one with the standard battery if you want to minimise the bulk in your pocket.

No Wi-Fi?

However, some things are harder to forgive. There is no Wi-Fi, which should be a standard feature on high-end smartphones. Yes, 3G is on-board so you can get high-speed internet access, but when you are out of network coverage you can’t access Wi-Fi which can be a tad frustrating.
The camera is a little disappointing too. At just two megapixels, it teeters on the edge of acceptability. A front-facing camera brings video calling within your reach though.

Touchy feely

This smartphone doesn’t have a touch-screen, so when the slider is closed you have to use the front controls to navigate around the device. On the good side, the navigation button has the usual left, right, up and down controls and is also a wheel you can rotate to scroll up and down.
On the bad side, the front buttons for Call, End, soft menu use and Windows Mobile Home and Back are touch buttons. We aren’t big fans of touch technology, and there’s no exception here. With no tactile or aural feedback to confirm the press, tapping the right command was a bit hit and miss at times.

Kane & Lynch: Dead Men : Mobile Game Review

Kane & Lynch: Dead Men

Kane & Lynch might sound like accountants, but they’re actually grizzled mercenaries battling their way through a 2D platform game. As you progress, you switch between the two guys, as situations demand.
The game is great knockabout fun, with plenty of action, explosions and brain-testing puzzles. Experienced mobile gamers will have seen plenty like it before, though, and it’s not up to the standards of games like the Splinter Cell series. Still, if you’re partial to a spot of jump’n’blasting, you could do far worse than this.

Palm Centro Review by 3G.co.uk

Palm Centro Review by 3G.co.uk

Palm seemed to lose its way a couple of years back, producing new models with Windows Mobile as the operating system. These were the Palm Treo 750v and the more recent Palm Treo 500v, which, although excellent smartphones in their own ways, weren’t the real deal for demanding Palm fans.

Now the Palm Centro, the smallest smartphone from Palm to date, run on the Palm operating system. The last phone with a Palm OS was the Treo 680, which was released in October 2006. Although under-powered (no 3G, no Wi-Fi and just a VGA camera), it remains an attractive machine, thanks to an excellent internet browser, simple email program and dense but effective QWERTY keypad making text and email composition a breeze. However, with the increasing number of compact smartphones on offer, it feels slightly on the large side.

Palm Centro size

The Palm Centro’s size is ideal – pocketable, slimmer and sleeker than the Treo 680. The screen is noticeably smaller but, at two inches, it’s just big enough for scrolling a document or a webpage. The screen is also brighter than before.

The QWERTY keypad is compact, with the keys closer together than previous handsets. Fears that it would be hard to use were soon allayed, though. There was a slight adjustment period, but it didn’t last long and soon we were typing with ease.

O2 Launches the 3G HSDPA Xda Atmos

O2 UK announced the launch of the O2 Xda Atmos, the latest addition to the successful Xda smartphone range. This sleek and compact device combines the standard mobile keypad with a full slide out QWERTY keyboard, making the Xda Atmos the perfect choice for those who prefer the look and feel of a traditional handset but who also require the functional capabilities of a PDA.
O2’s Xda Atmos is powered by Windows Mobile® 6.0, a mobile platform that integrates seamlessly with Microsoft Exchange – meaning that customers don’t need any additional hardware or software to deliver real time email securely to their Smartphone. The O2 Xda Atmos captures the familiar look and feel of Microsoft Windows into a sleek, portable device. With GPRS, EDGE, 3G, WiFi, HSDPA and Quad-Band GSM network capabilities, it also offers customers the best choice of high speed network wherever they are.

O2’s Xda Atmos also supports Microsoft Direct Push Email, a key business email solution that provides customers with real time access to inbox, calendar, contacts and tasks on the move. In addition, the Xda Atmos includes Microsoft Office tools enabling users to open, edit and send Microsoft Office Excel Mobile, Word Mobile and view PowerPoint Mobile documents.

O2 Xda Atmos will be on sale at a range of prices subject to tariff in an exclusive Matt Black colour, and is available now through O2 direct and indirect business and corporate sales and at the business online shop at http://www.o2.co.uk/.

Alcatel OT-V770 Review by 3G.co.uk

Alcatel OT-V770 Review by 3G.co.uk

There will always will be a market for entry-level handsets. We don’t all want the latest five-megapixel, HSDPA-enabled, sat nav-boasting super phone. Firstly, you might not be willing to pay through the nose for one or sign up to a long-term contract. Secondly, you may have no desire to use your handset for anything more than taking the odd snap, sending text messages and of course making phone calls.

French-Chinese manufacturer Alcatel has long been at the forefront of producing such handsets. The Alcatel OT-V770 is the newest member of its ‘Flavor’ family, but will it prove to be the big daddy of the clan?

Alcatel OT-V770 mirrored keypad

The OT-V770 is an impressively thin candybar at just 10mm. This is a move away from Alcatel’s more recent delve into the clamshell market (a la the Mandarina Duck) and we’ve got to admit the handset is quite striking. This is in large part due to the mirrored flat keypad that dominates the front fascia. As it catches the light, the keypad gives off a sparkle, with a touch of prestige not often associated with entry-level handsets. It’s available in a glossy white or soft-touch black, although we much prefer the black version, but perhaps that’s just down to our own gothic taste.

The keypad is described as being touch-sensitive, which often sets off alarm bells here at Choice Towers. There’s nothing more infuriating than a handset that launches into a function with the slightest accidental brush of a finger.

Thankfully this is not the case with the OT-V770. The keys require a degree of pressure for a command to be acknowledged. Although there is no definition between the keys − except for the navigation wheel found under the screen − they are large and spaced out enough so there shouldn’t be any problems keying in the correct digits, even for the larger thumbed among us. The navigation wheel, as well as guiding you through the various menu options, also accesses various shortcuts, which can be altered to your preference.

The OT-V770’s screen is not the biggest at 1.9 inches, but this is compensated with a bright display that can showcase up to 256,000 colours. When in the menu interface, the various icons are well spaced out, transforming from a cloudy grey to a colourful display when you move the cursor on to it.

Fifa 07 Mobile Game Review

Fifa 07

FIFA might be the biggest console footy brand, but that doesn't mean it's the best on mobile. Previous FIFA games have suffered from dodgy controls, which too often left even accomplished mobile gamers flailing like Reading trying to keep out the massed ranks of an Arsenal attack. FIFA has always sold well on mobile, but it didn't always deserve to.

Until now. FIFA 07 is a considerably revamped version, and it plays much better as a mobile phone game in its own right, rather than being a squeezed-down console game. You can play a season in one of five leagues, including the Premiership, obviously, but also France, Germany, Spain or Italy.

All the player and team names are real - traditionally one of FIFA's biggest selling points - and you can tweak your tactics, line-up and formation till the cows come home, which is good news if you're a fan of Rafa Benitez's compulsory rotation policy.

This has been the case in previous FIFA games though. What's changed is the gameplay itself. The controls have been simplified, making it easy to launch slick end-to-end passing moves, and reducing the skill needed to blast long shots into the top corner. Instead of focusing on realism, EA has focused on fun. And it's all the better for it.

Tackling is much easier too, meaning you can actually get the ball off other teams once in a while. All this isn't to suggest that FIFA 07 is too easy, but just that you can have fun and get regular rewards for your skills. Needless to say, the graphics look fab too, especially if you've got a decent 3D-capable phone.

Yes, the keepers are still a bit dodgy, but all in all, FIFA 07 has finally claimed top spot in the mobile football league table. The beautiful game is back again.

The Sims 2: Castaway Mobile Game Review

The Sims 2: Castaway relocates EA’s sim people to a remote paradise, tasking you with survival by fishing, building shelter and fires, and keeping yourself shipshape.
In other words, it’s just like The Sims 2, which is already out on mobile, but with the new setting dictating different tasks. Talking to other Sims is still a big part of the gameplay, and they give you tasks to complete which form the main progression of the game. As you go, you unlock new parts of the island, rewarding exploration. It’s great fun.

BBC iPlayer available on the iPhone

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) have announced that their on-demand video service i-Player is now available on the Apple iPhone and the iPod Touch.

The iPhone is now the only current device capable of using iPlayer, however the BBC have stated that they are working on versions for many other mobile handsets.

The version for iPhone and iPod touch users will allow streaming over a wi-fi connection.

However, the EDGE mobile network used by the iPhone is too slow for streaming video.

The BBC has agreed a deal with wi-fi firm The Cloud to provide all BBC online services for free at its 7,500 hotspots.

Motorola U9 Review by 3G.co.uk

Motorola U9 Review by 3G.co.uk

It’s very easy to underestimate the Motorola U9. This is in no small part because of Motorola’s recent tendency to re-hash old designs with a few new but minor flourishes.

So, when we first saw the U9, we blithely assumed that Motorola had simply dusted off the old Motorola PEBL phone, given it a glossy new finish and some bold colour options, removed the stroke-to-open mechanism and re-packaged it as a music player. However, there’s something far more clever than a stroke-to-open mechanism going on under the Motorola U9’s bonnet. Beneath the curvy fascia, Motorola has ingeniously fitted an OLED (organic light emitting diode) external display.

This OLED display may be a gimmick, but what a gimmick it is. For the uninitiated, OLEDs create light with the application of electricity and experts claim they can provide brighter, crisper displays while using less power than the traditional LED and LCD screens found on many of today’s mobiles and electronic gadgets.

Technology websites like Howstuffworks.com suggest that OLED technology is so clever it could soon enable wondrous technological feats, like, for example, an 80-inch HD TV with a screen that’s so thin and flexible, it could be rolled up when you’re not using it.
Or, in the case of the Motorola U9, the OLED enables you to choose from one of 20 floating screensavers that twinkle mischievously from beneath the U9’s glossy shell.

Motorola U9 music player

Even more impressive is the OLED’s ability to transform into a touch-sensitive music control pad. When the U9 is in music player mode and you flip the clamshell shut, the OLED on the outer display automatically presents you with all the track details and the option to forward, pause or rewind the track using touch-sensitive controls. This is technical wizardry at its finest and elevates the U9 from the ranks of regular clamshells into pioneering territory.

Although it’s no Nseries, Walkman or iPhone, the Motorola U9 has a decent music player and is very easy to use. Music pauses when a call comes in and there’s a dedicated music button on the keypad to the left of the central nav-pad.

Onyx Liscio Review by 3G.co.uk

Onyx Liscio Review by 3G.co.uk

When we first heard that a new UK mobile manufacturer was set to enter the fray, we were curious. After all, the mobile world is a tough place in which to make an impression unless you have a huge marketing budget or an iPhone-like launch up your sleeve.

Mild curiosity quickly became intrigue when we were sent the first press shots for the new Onyx Liscio mobile together with a brief overview. Sold as a SIM-free handset and available direct from Onyx for £129.99, the evidence suggested that here was a stylishly compact handset with a very appealing price tag and no contract tie-ins. Could this be the surprise budget hit of the winter?

Unfortunately, now that we’ve been able to get to grips with the Liscio first hand, we’re sorry to say that we’re rather more sceptical about its chances.

As a manufacturer with no pedigree, it’s always going to be a struggle when you’re pitted against brands with huge global kudos. As a result, the phone needs to make a huge first impression, which is not something that the Liscio comes close to achieving, even considering its value for money.

Look and feel

For a start, the phone is so light it feels insubstantial. Put it this way, if Toys ‘R’ Us created a fake mobile designed to distract toddlers from their parents’ new Nokia or Samsung, we’d imagine it would feel a lot like the Liscio.

This would be fine if the Liscio was candy floss pink and targeted Westlife-loving teens. But the Liscio’s chrome and graphite effect finish would suggest a target market that’s a little bit older and a little bit savvier. And these days there are loads of cheap mobiles out there from the top five manufacturers that also offer a low-end feature set, but offer a much better finish than the Liscio.

The other major issue with the phone is its display size. While the Liscio is by no means slim, its footprint is very small indeed. It’s about the size of a thick sponge finger and, as a result, the screen is tiny. But, as well as being small, the screen is also low-res, meaning that the menu options are hard to see, especially in broad daylight, when there’s a reflection against the shiny plastic display.

Turok : Mobile Game Review

Turok

There aren't enough dinosaurs in mobile games, but Disney is rectifying this with the release of Turok, based on the console series. It sees you running around an alien planet blasting mutant dinosaurs and enemy merceneries. If you're thinking this is the recipe for a platform game, you'd be right.

Turok is unforgiving for newbies, so you'll need thumbs of fire to succeed. However, it's not just repetitious shooting. You have to spend a fair amount of time sneaking up to things rather than wading in blasting. Once you get to grips with the difficult level, Turok becomes a rewarding and challenging platformer.

Metal Gear Acid Mobile Game Review

Mobile Gear Acid

We're still waiting for console classic Metal Gear Solid to come to mobile, but in the meantime, its spin-off Metal Gear Acid will do nicely. It offers the same blend of 3D visuald and stealthy sneaking, but without a turn-based game structure where you play cards to make certain actions.

There's a lot of strategy involved, as you might have guessed, epecially if you wnt to grab more cards along the way, including health cards to build up your energy. The pace is pretty stately, which gives you plenty of time to think and plot your next move, while the graphics are excellent. It might not be Solid, but it's certainly solid.

O2 Xda Orbit II Review by 3G.co.uk

O2 Xda Orbit II Review by 3G.co.uk
We’ve said it before but GPS looks set to be the must-have accessory for smartphones in 2008. The O2 Xda Orbit II is the latest device to house sat nav, with ALK’s CoPilot Live 7 built-in.

O2 Xda Orbit II touch-screen

Effectively O2’s own-branded HTC Touch Cruise, the Orbit II is relatively small, particularly when you take into account the vast amount of features the Orbit houses. There’s no QWERTY keyboard, so you’ll have to get to grips with the large 2.8-inch touch-screen. But, thankfully, the handset comes with a stylus that neatly packs away in the bottom right-hand corner. We say thankfully as some of the menu icons are rather small and trying to press these with our fingers and thumbs proved tricky. So using the stylus will be your best bet.

Under the screen is a navigation wheel that rotates 360 degrees as you move through the various menu icons available. Find your chosen option and simply press the button in the middle of the wheel.

The Orbit II runs the Windows Mobile 6 operating system and offers Word Mobile, PowerPoint Mobile and Excel Mobile, so you can read and send various documents while out of the office. Once again, the lack of QWERTY keyboard means you won’t be doing anything more than making the odd change to copy or writing a two or three-line email.

Garmin's nuvi 900T: Combo Mobile TV, Navigation Device

Garmin International announced the nuvi 900T, a personal navigation device (PND) that combines cutting edge navigation features with DVB-H mobile television. The device is being co-branded with wireless carrier 3 Italia -- the Hutchison Whampoa Group's Mobile Media Company -- and will be available exclusively in Italy.

Using the DVB-H format, video TV content is provided exclusively by La3 TV, the Mobile Digital TV provider of 3 Italia. Each unit comes with a six-month free subscription to La3 TV content as well as access to pay per view offerings. 3 Italia launched La3 TV -- the first Mobile Digital TV based on DVB-H technology in the world, broadcasting the entire FIFA World Cup 2006 on a mobile exclusive basis in Italy. 3 Italia's Digital Mobile TV customers can watch news, sports, movies and entertainment content through an array of digital channels, including Sky, Mediaset, Rai and the "in-house" produced channels La3 Live and La3 Sport.

The nuvi 900T features a bright, 4.3-inch WQVGA color touchscreen display, and can serve as a brilliant picture viewer (with photo navigation capability) and has optional travel guide features as well. Users can also play MP3 audio files, audio books from Audible.com, and pre-loaded games. The nuvi 900T boasts front-firing stereo speakers and a removable lithium-ion battery.
For hands-free phone calls, the nuvi 900T can be paired with compatible phones using Bluetooth wireless technology. Users can find and dial phone numbers (specifically supported phones can even access their history log of received, missed and dialed calls) or nuvi's points of interest database (hotels, restaurants, stores and more).

The nuvi 900T also includes Garmin Locate(TM), which answers age-old questions of a driver's current location or the location of his vehicle in a crowded parking lot. At any time, with a single tap of the screen, drivers can display their exact latitude and longitude coordinates, the nearest address and intersection, and the closest hospitals, police stations and gas stations. Additionally, the unit automatically marks its last known position every time it is removed from the mount.
Negotiating busy highways with the nuvi 900T is easy, thanks to a lifetime traffic subscription that helps drivers avoid gridlock and adjust routes accordingly. The nuvi 900T is also pre-loaded with safety camera data that can be updated free of charge for 30 days.

The nuvi 900T comes pre-programmed with highly detailed road maps of Europe. At startup, users are presented with Garmin's intuitive "Where To?" and "View Map" welcome screen, allowing for quick searches of addresses or millions of points of interest like restaurants, hotels, attractions, gas stations, and more. Turn-by-turn, voice-prompted directions guide drivers to
their destination, announcing streets by name along the way. If they miss a turn, nuvi automatically recalculates a route and gets them back on track.

The nuvi 900T will be available exclusively in Italy in July 2008. Visit http://www.garmin.com/ for more information and pricing.

Yahoo! onePlace to Revolutionize Mobile Content ?

Yahoo! continues to enable the global mobile ecosystem with the unveiling of Yahoo! onePlace.
Yahoo! onePlace is designed to be an essential tool to enable consumers to better manage the wide selection of content available across the Internet.

Yahoo! onePlace™ will bring together a consumer’s interests, passions and important information into a single location – creating a rich and highly personalized experience. Everything is instantly organized, dynamically kept current, and served to them the way they want. So now, the content they consume and the way they consume it will be hyper-customized to their specific preferences and tastes.

Yahoo! onePlace will be simple-to-use because it will be based on a familiar process of using bookmarks to instantly link to practically any piece of content (news feeds, web sites, videos, images, emails, search queries, etc.) from anywhere across the Internet. Once in Yahoo! onePlace, everything will be kept automatically updated (with the latest game score, stock price, etc.) as well as assigned categories and tags – or placed into customized “collections” that consumers create – making it extremely intuitive for consumers to find and combine their content in the ways most useful to them.

Yahoo! onePlace will allow consumers to stay better informed on the topics they care about, with less work – for their daily interests (e.g., favorite sports teams or stocks), as well as those they only care about on a selective basis. For example, if a user is planning a holiday to Paris in June, he could create a “Paris” collection, and begin linking it to any information he thinks will be useful to him on his trip: weather conditions, city guides, restaurant reviews, hotel reservations, walking maps, songs of Edith Piaf, English-French dictionaries, winery recommendations, etc.

Yahoo! onePlace will give consumers a single location to consume all of their information contextually, keeping it updated (so they know, for example, if their flight times have changed) and instantly accessible whenever and however they want it. The product will be configured to allow consumers to do the same for literally hundreds of different topics.

For more information on Yahoo! onePlace, go to http://mobile.yahoo.com/oneplace.
