ORANGE LAUNCHES DANCE POWERED CHARGER AT GLASTONBURY

Orange today announced the launch of a mobile phone charger prototype that is powered by dance energy. The Orange Dance Charge is the result of months of research into alternate, sustainable energy sources to power mobile phones during summer music festivals.

Working with renewable energy specialists, GotWind, who were also responsible for last year’s Orange Wind Charge and this year’s Orange ReCharge Pod, Orange commissioned the research into a kinetic energy portable phone charger that would harness the energy created by festival revellers dancing to their favourite bands to ensure a clean and renewable energy source.

Whilst the research of the Orange and GotWind team is still in its infancy and continues to be developed. Orange has built fully functioning prototype models of the Dance Charge that will be tested at this year’s Glastonbury Festival, taking place at Worthy Farm in Pilton, Somerset from 27-29 June.

The Dance Charge prototype weighs in at only 180grams and measures 4¼” x 2½”, approximately the same size as a pack of cards and the same weight as a mobile phone. The Dance Charge unit comes encased in an elasticated, black, neoprene strap with Velcro attachments which is attached over the wearer’s bicep in a similar fashion to a runner’s arm-mounted mp3 player.

As the user moves their arms along to the music – a specially designed system of weights and magnets, similar to that found in kinetic energy watches, creates an electrical current which provides a top-up of charge to a storage battery. So whilst festival goers are out dancing to their favourite bands, the charger stores dance generated power in the reservoir battery, ready for when they return to their tent each night to recharge their phone.

Orange also has plans to showcase The Dance Charge with an interactive Dance Charging Man who will help recharge mobile phones during the festival through the power of dance! The Dance Charging Man will only require one form of payment…a dance with the person who needs their phone re-charged!

Airremote turns iPhone into remote control

The iPhone is looking to replace your humble remote control with a new application that is due to launch when the App Store goes live in July.

Called Airremote, the software and accompanying box of tricks which will cost £150, will give you an interface on your iPhone or iPod touch that allows you to control your Sky digibox, TV and even the lights in your home. The new system is looking to replace the all-in-one remote controls like the Philips Pronto and is available as a software only or kit offering.

While the software only system will work with any device that is Wi-Fi enabled, due to the iPhone or iPod touch not coming with an infrared receiver, users looking to use it with there TV or Sky box will have to connect a box that connects your Sky box with your wireless network to allow you to control it.

Asphalt 3: Street Rules Mobile Game Review

Asphalt 3: Street Rules Mobile Game Review

This isn’t the Asphalt 3 that has been out on mobile for a while now. It’s the all-new version for N-Gage, Nokia’s new games service. And that means better graphics and a landscape mode, letting you turn your phone on its side and play.

The game looks amazing, and it plays great too – sitting somewhere between Burnout, Ridge Racer and Outrun in the pantheon of driving games. You unlock new challenges by winning races, but the cops will be on your tail if you get too feisty.

It also ties into Nokia’s N-Gage Arena games community, letting you compare your earnings with friends.

LG Announce LG Chocolate 3

LG have announced the LG Chocolate 3 which comes in new black and blue colours. The following was posted on the LG site. Talk about a sweet phone. We took everything we loved about the Chocolate phones and made them even tastier. There’s still a music player with external control wheel, but now it has an FM transmitter to sync it to your car stereo. Then you can pick from, like, a million songs from Verizon Wireless’ V CAST Music Library. Well, more than a million. More like 3 million songs. Enjoy rocking out with the dual speakers and Bluetooth® for wireless stereo sound.

You’re going to want to store as many songs as you can on a luxurious Gigabyte* of memory. Or, just opt for the expandable memory up to an 8 GB microSD™ card. Who knows how much you’ll need once you’re snapping pix of your friends every chance you get. The Chocolate 3 upgraded to a 2.0 megapixel camera that takes a good shot of everyone’s best angle.

So keep your eyes peeled. The LG Chocolate 3 hits stores and online sometime in July.

Holographic handsets on the market by 2010

Holographic mobile handsets capable of projecting, capturing and sending 3D images have been developed by an Indian tech company.

By 2010 the devices will routinely beam 3D films, games and virtual goods into our laps according to Indian technology giant Infosys, which has patented the handset.

The portable machines will capture and send 3D snapshots of the surrounding world, helping accident investigators, teachers and doctors work remotely by instantly relaying realistic depictions of car damage, injuries, medical scans or educational aids.

The powerful onboard processor on the Infosys machine would build a series of 2D shots taken, for example, from a digital camera, into 3D holograms using algorithms called 'Fourier' transformations to calculate the extra third dimension.

The patent, granted by the US Patent and Trademark Office, says this allows complex 3D holographic images to be squeezed through the narrow pipes of existing communications networks, by sending only the unprocessed data to be translated into the 3D hologram at the other end.

Infosys's device will be able to both send and receive these 3D images, displaying them using a projector with a laser source and micro holographic optical elements lenses.

The global 3D screen market is forecast by industry to grow to 8.1 million units by 2010.

LG KF510 Review by 3G.co.uk

LG KF510 Review by 3G.co.uk

It's amazing to think that a couple of years ago LG was rolling out humdrum clamshells that failed to fire the imagination. But since the launch of the heart-melting Chocolate slider in 2006, the Korean giant has literally become a style trendsetter. The follow-up Shine provoked a slew of rival metallic, mirrored handsets, the Fashion Prada blower could easily be cited as kick-starting the whole touch phone revolution, and the recent 3G.co.uk fave, the Secret, is just simply awesome. These are hard acts to follow, so can its latest slider, the KF510, maintain LG's growing rep?

LG KF510 - Heavy metal

Coming from a mid-range background, you would think the KF510's chances were low. But true to form LG has maintained its impeccable production values, brilliantly combining the metallic torso of the Shine, with the touch-sensitive keys of the Chocolate. Its real metal body gives the KF510 an assured heft and a quality feel that is sometimes missing from middle-class handsets. While it may feel pretty solid, this skater is also impressively slender, measuring a lean and trim 10.9mm.

Lying dormant, the handset's minimalist design is the perfect backdrop to enjoy its rather fetching colour graduation paint job. Our sample arrived in a more sophisticated stardust dark grey, but the fading paint work is best showcased on the sunset red model.

LG KF510 - Eye catching paint work
And like its vaporous veneer, the skater mechanism is similarly slick with a nifty inner slider hiding the camera, and a hotswappable microSD card slot. LG has also borrowed the tempered scratch-proof glass from the Secret, giving the KF510's 2.2-inch QVGA-quality display a robust sheen. So apart from the highly usable but plastic chequered keypad that feels a bit tacky under thumb, the KF510's build oozes a metallic quality last seen at this level in the Shine.

The iPhone's shocking cost of international downloads

The thousands of consumers planning to snap up a 3G iPhone when they go on sale next month could be hit with bills of thousands of pounds if they download music or programmes overseas, industry insiders warned last week.

Apple and its partner O2 have used the unlimited download facility in much of its marketing for both the first iPhone that hit the shops last November, and the new 3G model, which will be available free on some O2 tariffs.

However, the unlimited data and wi-fi allowances only apply in the UK. Once you start using the device abroad, charges shoot up to £3 for each megabyte (Mb) of data downloaded in the EU and £6 elsewhere in the world.
That means watching the average BBC iPlayer programme, which is about 300Mb in size, would cost £900 if you were in France and £1,800 for someone visiting America.

If you do need to access the internet through your iPhone while outside the UK, and are likely to be downloading a significant amount of information, the best option is probably to take out a data-roaming add-on for when you require the service.

O2 offers a range of bolt-on options, including a 50Mb package that costs £50 a month. There are also some catches when downloading information in this country, though.

Analysts say the new O2 deal offers better value than the previous package for those who will use their iPhones for extensive internet browsing in this country thanks to the “unlimited” download policy. But even this is subject to a fair-usage policy.

This means that, although there is no set limit, your connection may be stopped or dramatically slowed if you are deemed to be over-using it.

Now mobile phone users could be charged to RECEIVE calls in the UK

Consumers could be charged to receive mobile phone calls when using handsets in the UK, according to industry insiders.
A system could be imposed on domestic calls similar to that for customers who take their handsets overseas and have to pay up to 19p a minute to receive a call.

The notion of being charged to take calls will shock many UK consumers. It is, however, the norm in the U.S. and some Asian countries, including China and Singapore, and could result in overall bills falling.

The levy could be imposed as a backlash by mobile phone providers to proposals from EU Telecoms commissioner Viviane Reding.

She wants to limit the fee imposed by every operator in Europe on calls people receive from rival networks, known as the mobile termination rate.

Miss Reding believes capping the MTR would remove cost and red tape from running services.
Her spokesman Martin Selmayr said the Commission will present a recommendation this month to force a cut in the rates the networks charge each other.

Officials hope this could encourage a move towards a U.S. model, where overall charges are lower as companies do not have to pay to connect to other networks. Although mobile phone users pay for incoming calls, fees for dialling out have fallen to compensate for this.

Nokia 6600 Slide Review by 3G.co.uk

Nokia 6600 Slide Review by 3G.co.uk

Last year’s 6500 came in two versions, the slender Classic and the chunkier Slide. Add 100 to the number and check out this year’s model – not quite size zero but the Slide has certainly been on a diet. And it’s still a contender for the catwalk – black is the new black. It’ll turn heads not only because of its compact size but also because of its eye-catching glossy steel skin. It feels good because of the metal, too, even down to the aluminium direction pad, and it’s nice to use because the slide mechanism is skilfully balanced and the compact keys are just big enough to use.
Thankfully, the look of the 6600 Slide bears no resemblance to the original Nokia 6600 – a phone that was as wide as this one is svelte, like an oval with the ends flattened and with curvy keys and a big joystick in the middle. How times change.

Nokia 6600 Slide - Feature friendly

Squeezing a lot into a tiny space is the keynote of this phone. You need to look closely to see the front camera for voice calling, but it’s there (whether you’ll ever use it for video calls is another matter). It is also impressive that Nokia has squeezed four GSM antennae and two 3G antennae into this tiny casing, not to mention the FM radio aerial too. The 3G isn’t the whizziest HSDPA data speed but it’s not really a phone where you’ll want to be displaying detailed web pages – the 2.2-inch screen wouldn’t do it justice. There’s the Opera Mini browser so you can surf the net. Just don’t expect it to be comfortable.

Enjoy Life Unplugged with WildCharge!

Wildcharge has released its latest wireless phone charger, the WildCharger.

The WildCharger pad is flat and thin with a conductive surface. Once a cell phone or other electronic device that is enabled with WildCharge technology is placed on the pad – anywhere on the pad and at any orientation – it will instantaneously receive power from the pad. It is that simple. And charging speed is the same as if the device is plugged to the wall!

Enabling a portable electronic device with WildCharge technology is also simple. A WildCharge adapter attaches to – or outright replaces – the device’s back cover. This adapter has tiny external “bumps” (contact-points) that come in physical contact with the pad.

Once a compatible electronic device is placed on the WildCharger pad, power is transferred from the pad’s surface through the contact-points to the WildCharge adapter and into the device. The geometries of the charging surface and the contact-points guarantee that regardless of where the device is placed on the pad’s surface, a closed electrical circuit is formed between the surface and the device. Such direct contact allows for a very efficient and safe power transfer without generating harmful radiation or magnetic fields.

Orange offers eco-friendly phone recharging at Glastonbury

Orange is using the power of wind to give festival goers another option for keeping their phone battery topped up. Orange announced the launch of a freestanding wind powered mobile phone charging station, giving Glastonbury revellers no excuse not to keep in touch with their friends, relay their favourite stories from the Festival and of course ask the inevitable question “where are you?”.

At over 7 meters in height, the free standing REcharge Pod is a self sufficient unit that supports a wind generator and solar panels and can charge up to 100 mobile phones simultaneously. It is estimated that the Orange REcharge pod will charge thousands of mobile phones over the course of the 3 day festival, and the energy generated by the Orange REcharge pod to be the equivalent of powering a DJ booth for Groove Armada for a marathon 88 hour set!

Working with renewable energy experts GotWind, the REcharge Pod is an evolution of the Orange portable wind charger, tested at 2007’s Glastonbury Festival. The REcharge Pod will act as a trial in using renewable energy sources on a larger scale, with a view to ultimately powering elements of the Chill n’ Charge tent at future Glastonbury Festivals.

Samsung F480 Tocco Review by 3G.co.uk

Thank heavens for the new trend of giving phones a name rather than just a model number. Such is the proliferation of mobile launches of late, consumers would need Pythagoras-like numerical ability to remember the model numbers of even this year's launches.

Samsung's new touch-screen phone is called both the F480 and the Tocco, which is the Italian word for touch. Considering that Samsung has just launched a touch-phone handset called the F490, we'll close the door on a world of confusion and refer to this phone solely as the Tocco.
The handset is so named because it's a phone with few keys and a touch-sensitive interface, which is almost de rigueur for 2008.

Samsung F480 Tocco - Tocco vs the iPhone

The Tocco has certain advantages over Apple's iPhone. Firstly, it's a great size. Although there's no doubting the iPhone is a popular phone, there's no escaping that it's a big hunk of metal and glass that some people find too big. It may be unbeatable as a mobile internet browser, but if you use it mostly for calls and texts, pocket-sized it definitely isn't.

However, the Tocco is a great size. Slim at 11.6mm, it fits comfortably in the palm. Although the 2.8-inch screen is not as impressive as Apple's 3.5-inch one, it's still readable. The Tocco's screen is sharp, but the resolution isn't exceptional.

Switch on the device and the first screen reads ‘Welcome to 3G' - something the 2G iPhone can't boast. The Tocco delivers fast data connections, and 7.2Mbps HSDPA data transfer speeds. There's no Wi-Fi mind.

Sony Ericsson F305 with Motion Gaming

Today’s announcement sees Sony Ericsson putting gaming at the heart of its latest phone release. Targeted firmly at a youth audience, the F305 with Motion Gaming lets users control games with the flick of a wrist or the swing of an arm, and then see the results straightaway on the screen. Using advanced motion sensor technology, the phone can, for example, follow your actions to imitate bowling or casting a fishing line.

With the F305 your favourite game is only one-click away. Enjoy the full gaming experience with stereo speakers, which also come in handy for sharing the latest track on the media player. MOBIADO INTRODUCES THE PROFESSIONAL 105 EM AND THE PROFESSIONAL 105 GCB

Mobiado continues the tradition of the hardwood Executive Model series with the Professional 105 EM (PRO105EM); and unveils its first gold phone, the Professional 105 GCB (PRO105GCB).

PROFESSIONAL 105 EM

The PRO105EM is the evolution in the hardwood Executive Model series, combining hardwood, aluminum, sapphire crystal, and 24-karat gold to truly create the ultimate in luxury. The Mobiado PRO105EM is available in two versions; Cocobolo and Ebony.

Cocobolo and Ebony hardwoods exemplify everything you would expect from new levels in luxury design. Every PRO105EM is as different and unique as every rare exotic tree is. No two phones are alike. Both hardwoods have been prized for centuries for their high durability, strength, high value, and rare beauty. Each pair of wood inserts is CNC machined from the same piece of solid wood to guarantee consistent grain structure on both sides of the phone.

The hardwood is then inlayed into an anodized aluminum frame. The buttons of the PRO105EM are sapphire crystal, hand painted with black paint, to produce a front surface made entirely of sapphire crystal. This material combination has produced a case not matched by anyone in quality or design.

PROFESSIONAL 105 GCB
Combining age-old techniques used with Swiss mechanical watches and the modern simplicity of large pieces of sapphire crystal; the PRO105GCB is a stunning masterpiece with classic details.
The frame is precision CNC machined from solid brass and is then finished with a 5 micron thick 24-karat gold plating. The screws are gold plated brass.

The buttons of the PRO105GCB are sapphire crystal, hand painted with 24-karat gold, to produce a front surface made entirely of sapphire crystal. The PRO105GCB is modern marvel with a classic flare. A new tradition has begun.

All the lettering and symbols on the PRO105EM and PRO105GCB are hand painted with 24-karet gold. Using a unique painting process, the gold keypad visibly disappears and becomes illuminated when the keypad lights up, creating a dramatic effect when used in low light conditions.

Using the construction of the Professional 105 ZAF lineup, the entire front and back of the PRO105EM and PRO105GCB have been crafted from large pieces of sapphire crystal, providing a modern minimalist look with a wear resistance second only to diamond. The PRO105EM and the PRO105GCB utilize a unique and hidden sliding battery cover mechanism (patent pending) with the battery cover being made entirely from one piece of sapphire crystal.

The PRO105EM and PRO105GCB are unlocked, quad-band GSM/EGSM and dual-band WCDMA network operational. They work within North America, Europe, Africa, Asia- Pacific, and South America where GSM/EGSM 850/900/1800/1900 and WCDMA 850/2100 networks are available. They are equipped with a 2 megapixel camera and video camera, more than 1 GB internal memory, 2" display with up to 16 million colors, Bluetooth and micro USB connectivity, and a music player that supports AAC, eAAC+, and MP3 audio formats.

LG KF750 Secret Review by 3G.co.uk

LG KF750 Secret Review by 3G.co.uk

Like boxers and prop forwards, tough phones are not meant to be good looking. However, the LG KF750 Secret is not any old mobile. Comprising of a carbon fibre rear and a tempered glass fascia, the Secret is one of the toughest phones around and it’s almost impossible to mark.

To be fair, 3G.co.uk has racked up some impressive credentials in the tough-phone testing department recently. When putting the JCB Toughphone through its paces, we showered with it, dropped it from the top window of a block of flats and drove over it.

However, we didn’t mind being mean to the JCB phone because it’s a bruiser that looks as though it’s built for a building site.

The LG Secret, on the other hand, is as smooth as a seal’s belly and looks as though it should only be used on special occasions. LG has constructed the Secret in such a way that, even when carried regularly in a pocket with keys and change, it should look just as good in six months’ time as it does when you buy it.

Now, how many phones can you say that about?

MOTO Z10 Review by 3G.co.uk

MOTO Z10 Review by 3G.co.uk

Motorola, remember them? Well after a relatively quiet year, the American manufacturer hopes to jog people’s memory with its premium-end slider phone, the MOTO Z10. With video at its core, both recording and playing, will it prove to be an Oscar winner, or a Raspberry letdown?
The MOTORIZR Z8 proved a hugely popular handset when it was launched last summer, in part to the fact that it came bundled with a full version of the original Jason Bourne film, The Bourne Identity. Perhaps trying to recreate former glories, the MOTO Z10 uses the same banana-like design of the Z8, and this time you don’t just get the first Bourne film; you get the entire trilogy, something Motorola needs to take credit for. But more of that later.

MOTO Z10 Robust body armour

With a glossy black face placed on top of a stainless steel body, the Z10 has a good aesthetic look. At 119g it’s a tad on the heavy side, and pre-slide, it resembles a thick candybar rather than a sleek slider; however, its bulk and steel anatomy does suggest a manner of robustness, and as with the Z8, the sliding mechanism glides effortlessly. The idea behind the banana-like design is that the contours of the phone fit comfortably around your face, providing a better call quality as the microphone is in closer proximity to your mouth. Pop the slider open and the screen pops up on a hinge creating a curve-like affect. In truth, when we used the phone, none of our recipients made any reference to how clear we sounded, nor did they say how bad it was.

The MOTO Z10’s home screen is unusual in that it feels quite cluttered. Whereas the norm tends to be for handsets to simply show the operator, time, date and shortcut to the menu screen pitched on a bright colourful display, the Z10 does all this along with five ‘plug-ins’. Each plug-in consists of an icon with a short description of what it does. The plug-ins can be changed to your liking, but we felt that it made the screen too crowded.

Apple Introduces MobileMe Internet Service

Apple introduced MobileMe, a new Internet service that delivers push email, push contacts and push calendars from the MobileMe service in the “cloud” to native applications on iPhone, iPod touch, Macs and PCs. MobileMe also provides a suite of elegant, ad-free web applications that deliver a desktop-like experience through any modern browser. MobileMe applications (http://www.me.com/) include Mail, Contacts and Calendar, as well as Gallery for viewing and sharing photos and iDisk for storing and exchanging documents online.
With a MobileMe email account, all folders, messages and status indicators look identical whether checking email on iPhone, iPod touch, a Mac or a PC. New email messages are pushed instantly to iPhone over the cellular network or Wi-Fi, removing the need to manually check email and wait for downloads. Push also keeps contacts and calendars continuously up-to-date so changes made on one device are automatically pushed up to the cloud and down to other devices. Push works with the native applications on iPhone and iPod touch, Microsoft Outlook for the PC, and Mac OS X applications, Mail, Address Book and iCal, as well as the MobileMe web application suite.
