Devil May Cry: Dante's Awakening - Mobile Game Review

Devil May Cry: Dante's Awakening Review

It’s an impressive 3D title based on the spooky console game of the same name. It’s got monsters, demons, and a suitably brooding hero by the name of Dante. What’s not to like?

Controlling Dante, with a choice of sword or guns, is kept simple and intuitive. Like the Resident Evil games, you choose a path in the game, allowing you to come back and replay to see the bits you missed. Best of all, it looks ravishing, and shows off your handset’s gaming capabilities perfectly.

Kane & Lynch: Dead Men : Mobile Game Review

Kane & Lynch: Dead Men

Kane & Lynch might sound like accountants, but they’re actually grizzled mercenaries battling their way through a 2D platform game. As you progress, you switch between the two guys, as situations demand.
The game is great knockabout fun, with plenty of action, explosions and brain-testing puzzles. Experienced mobile gamers will have seen plenty like it before, though, and it’s not up to the standards of games like the Splinter Cell series. Still, if you’re partial to a spot of jump’n’blasting, you could do far worse than this.

Fifa 07 Mobile Game Review

Fifa 07

FIFA might be the biggest console footy brand, but that doesn't mean it's the best on mobile. Previous FIFA games have suffered from dodgy controls, which too often left even accomplished mobile gamers flailing like Reading trying to keep out the massed ranks of an Arsenal attack. FIFA has always sold well on mobile, but it didn't always deserve to.

Until now. FIFA 07 is a considerably revamped version, and it plays much better as a mobile phone game in its own right, rather than being a squeezed-down console game. You can play a season in one of five leagues, including the Premiership, obviously, but also France, Germany, Spain or Italy.

All the player and team names are real - traditionally one of FIFA's biggest selling points - and you can tweak your tactics, line-up and formation till the cows come home, which is good news if you're a fan of Rafa Benitez's compulsory rotation policy.

This has been the case in previous FIFA games though. What's changed is the gameplay itself. The controls have been simplified, making it easy to launch slick end-to-end passing moves, and reducing the skill needed to blast long shots into the top corner. Instead of focusing on realism, EA has focused on fun. And it's all the better for it.

Tackling is much easier too, meaning you can actually get the ball off other teams once in a while. All this isn't to suggest that FIFA 07 is too easy, but just that you can have fun and get regular rewards for your skills. Needless to say, the graphics look fab too, especially if you've got a decent 3D-capable phone.

Yes, the keepers are still a bit dodgy, but all in all, FIFA 07 has finally claimed top spot in the mobile football league table. The beautiful game is back again.

The Sims 2: Castaway Mobile Game Review

The Sims 2: Castaway relocates EA’s sim people to a remote paradise, tasking you with survival by fishing, building shelter and fires, and keeping yourself shipshape.
In other words, it’s just like The Sims 2, which is already out on mobile, but with the new setting dictating different tasks. Talking to other Sims is still a big part of the gameplay, and they give you tasks to complete which form the main progression of the game. As you go, you unlock new parts of the island, rewarding exploration. It’s great fun.

Turok : Mobile Game Review

Turok

There aren't enough dinosaurs in mobile games, but Disney is rectifying this with the release of Turok, based on the console series. It sees you running around an alien planet blasting mutant dinosaurs and enemy merceneries. If you're thinking this is the recipe for a platform game, you'd be right.

Turok is unforgiving for newbies, so you'll need thumbs of fire to succeed. However, it's not just repetitious shooting. You have to spend a fair amount of time sneaking up to things rather than wading in blasting. Once you get to grips with the difficult level, Turok becomes a rewarding and challenging platformer.

Metal Gear Acid Mobile Game Review

Mobile Gear Acid

We're still waiting for console classic Metal Gear Solid to come to mobile, but in the meantime, its spin-off Metal Gear Acid will do nicely. It offers the same blend of 3D visuald and stealthy sneaking, but without a turn-based game structure where you play cards to make certain actions.

There's a lot of strategy involved, as you might have guessed, epecially if you wnt to grab more cards along the way, including health cards to build up your energy. The pace is pretty stately, which gives you plenty of time to think and plot your next move, while the graphics are excellent. It might not be Solid, but it's certainly solid.

Bomberman : Mobile Game Review

BomberMan

Bomberman is one of the most enduring games around, with 25 years since its first incarnation. The core gameplay has always been marvellously simple: you control a little man running round a maze dropping bombs, while collecting power-ups to make you even more explosive.
This all-new version won’t disappoint hardcore fans, thanks to its Classic mode that’s a homage to the original Bomberman game, just as you remember it. But for those of us who don’t wear rose-tinted spectacles, the real appeal is the other mode: Bomberman Supreme.
It’s got modern visuals for starters, with a graphical overhaul that’s simply spiffing. It might still be an overhead view, but it looks great.

Also new is the inclusion of two difficulty modes, ensuring the game is accessible to Bomberman newbies yet also presents a challenge for old hands. The latter will also enjoy the comprehensive history and help section.

But if you’re a Bomberman fan, the best news is yet to come: there’s a multiplayer Bluetooth mode, so you and a friend can blow each other up to your heart’s content. It works really well too, making it easy to connect and play within a matter of seconds.

You will, admittedly, need to persuade a friend to purchase and download Bomberman to play against them – but trust us, give them ten minutes with the version on your phone, and they’ll be sold. Whether you’re an established Bomberman fan or new to the series, you need this game. It’s explosively good.

Ronnie O'Sullivan Snooker 2008 Mobile Game Review

Ronnie O'Sullivan Snooker 2008

If, like us, you only get excited about snooker once a year, this new Ronnie O'Sullivan mobile game may at least prolong your potting jow. One one level, it's a pretty standard snooker game, with a top-down aiming view and a choice of views to actually watch your superb pot (or not).

The best bit is the game's career mode though, which lets you take on some of Ronnie's best moments from his entire career, from a callow teenager through to today. It's not something we've seen in a sports game before, but works really well. If you're a snooker fan, you need this game.

Catchphrase : Mobile Game Review

CatchPhrase

In the immortal words, we’ll say what we see: Catchphrase is a slick mobile update of the classic TV quiz, where the aim is to guess the catchphrases on screen.

The game is based closely on the structure of the original TV show, with all the original rounds. Guessing catchphrases involves tapping them in like a text message, which is a bit fiddly, but on the whole works well. It gets the tension of the original across, and results in a worthy successor to Noel’s star turn.

Disney Announces New Mobile Games

First up is Lego Bionicle Defenders, (based on the flash game "Tower Defenders"), featuring the popular Lego line of articulated toys in the mobile world. This fast-moving game takes place in a hostile undersea environment, where the player must battle through 16 levels and clear out all the Barrakis’ hostile sea creatures in their search for the Mask of Life. Lego Bionicle Defenders will be available from March 4.

Also in March, Disney Channel TV star Hannah Montana will be available on mobile, with a range of phone personalisation features, including wallpaper, screensavers, realtones, ringtones, and phone themes.

Project Gotham Racing Mobile Game Review

Project Gotham Racing

For those of you still playing on that antique Atari of yours, Project Gotham Racing is one of the best console racing games money can buy, blending a host of glamorous cars with amazing-looking 3D scenery from real-world cities. It's one of the main reasons to buy an Xbox 360 console.

So how can you fit such a complex game onto mobile? Well, Glu Mobile has managed it with aplomb. PGR Mobile is a pitch-perfect conversion that keeps the original's tight controls while packing graphics that - while obviously nowhere near the console version - still set the bar for mobile racers.

You get to race in London, Paris and San Francisco, each with identifiable scenery and tracks. The gameplay is a mixture of street races, time trials, head-to-head battles and even road-cone avoidance. You compete in the races, and if you do well, you earn medals and money to buy faster and more powerful cars.

Key to the game - just like the console version - is kudos. You earn kudos from flashy moves, like skidding round corners, skillful overtaking and even leaving the ground (easiest on the sharp hills of San Francisco).

It looks ace, with proper 3D visuals if your handset is good enough. Equally important is the fact that it's fast, meaning that racing thrills haven't been sacrificed for graphical flair. There is a bit of pop-up (buildings appearing seemingly from nowhere), but this is acceptable given how the game plays.

Most importantly, the cars handle like you'd expect from playing the Xbox 360 version - which, in a game focused around skidding, is vital. And the controls have been well worked for mobile, so you don't get your thumbs in a tangle even when snorting through a tight corner with two other cars on your tail.

Love driving games? Project Gotham Racing is the one to own. Especially if you're sceptical about whether mobile phones can handle the genre. And best of all, the game is connected, so you can compare your kudos score with other players around the world. Simply marvellous.
