Veveo launch mobile Web Video Service for Sony Ericssons

Veveo has launched a new mobile Web video service for Sony Ericsson customers called Vtap to provide access to over 150 million Web videos on the Internet.
With the new offering, users can easily search, view and collect relevant and high quality Web videos from anywhere on the Internet, including popular sites like YouTube, DailyMotion, and MySpace , using their existing data services.
Veveo is the force behind the video-anywhere revolution and the Vtap service, which puts the power of searching, browsing and viewing of Web videos at the fingertips of consumers.

Veveo is actively working with mobile operators, mobile manufacturers, TV providers, consumer electronics manufacturers and content creators to deploy its Vtap solutions and is backed by venture funding from Matrix Partners, Northbridge Venture Partners, Norwest Venture Partners and OmniCapital Group.

As per this latest announcement, Sony Ericsson video-enabled handsets and Web portal customers are now offered this Web video service from Vtap which been optimized specifically for Sony Ericsson's multimedia handsets and is available immediately for Sony Ericsson Java Platform 8 (JP8) enabled handsets models: Z770i, K850i, W910i, K660i, W890i, Z750i and Sony Ericsson's JP7 models: W880i, K810i, T650i, K530i, W580i, K770i, and W660i. The service will support English, French, Italian, German and Spanish languages.

Vtap is a mobile search service that’s fine-tuned for video but can be used for audio and text as well. The technology provides relevant video results by indexing video metadata, like tags and surrounding text, instead of actual video file innards.

When users start typing search keywords into the query box, the search engine speedily starts returning relevant results based on the letters they have already started typing. This allows users to type in abbreviated search keywords instead of typing a whole word, which makes more sense for mobile users.

Vtap's intuitive browsing automatically groups video results together logically into easy-to-browse folders. This allows users to choose between incremental search and browsing and dynamically created menus to find and enjoy the most relevant video content on their mobile handsets.

Sony Ericsson W380 Review by 3G.co.uk

Sony Ericsson W380 Review by 3G.co.uk

Sony Ericsson has been shipping out Walkman phones left, right and centre in recent months, but it has a been a couple of years since we've seen a clamshell version of the popular music phone range. Available in one of four colours, including the baffling black orange, the W380 is actually a little heavier than it looks, with a degree of thumb pressure needed to flip the phone open. Its shell also feels a little plastic.

Open the phone up to reveal the keypad and a somewhat small screen. All the usual Sony Ericsson controls are found here, including the navigation wheel, back button and cancel button. Under the navigation wheel are three much narrower keys. From left to right they are the internet key, the on/off button and the My shortcuts menu. You need a fairly steady hand to hit these, but the rest of the keys are both large and well spaced out.

Sony Ericsson W380 OLED external screen

While the Sony Ericsson W380 may not be the highest specced of the Walkman range, it does boast some appealing features. Even though it has a slightly plastic shell, we should also mention that on the front of the handset is an OLED screen that switches on and off depending if the handset is in use or not. Underneath the display are three braille-like symbols that are the media player's controls when the clamshell is closed. You can both skip and pause tracks by simply pressing the relevant buttons, which will give a short vibration to acknowledge a response. The OLED screen also displays the time as well as what radio frequency you're listening to.

Sony Ericsson W890i Review by 3G.co.uk

Sony Ericsson W890i Review by 3G.co.uk

Having been announced back in November last year, it has been a long time coming, but the Sony Ericsson W890i has finally landed. 3G has eagerly awaited the latest addition to the popular Walkman range, but will the W890i prove to be a cut above the rest, or just another music phone?

With its petite frame and supreme music capabilities, we were big fans of the uber-slim Sony Ericsson W880i and, thankfully the W890i flaunts some exciting new flourishes without sacrificing the original's crowd-pleasing style.

Now with HSDPA, Google Maps, a 3.2-megapixel camera and a bundled 2GB memory card, the W890i packs more features than its predecessor, while keeping its svelte appearance. Available in espresso black, mocha brown or sparkling silver, the metallic casing gives the handset a robust feel, despite only weighing in at 78g.

There's also a really useful battery cover lock, operated by two switches on either side of the handset, which both make it easy to remove the battery cover and adds to the secure and reliable feel of the phone. Flick the switches and the back cover gently pops out. It's a beautifully simple idea that means you won't be chipping your fingernails attempting to dislodge the rear casing, as is the case with so many handsets.

Sony Ericsson W580i Review by 3G.co.uk

Sony Ericsson W580i Review by 3G.co.uk

Sony Ericsson’s Walkman music phone range is no stranger to soundtracking punters’ exercise regimes. Back in 2006 it launched the W710i, an active phone complete with a built-in pedometer to monitor fitness levels. The W580i is a follow-up of sorts but less sporty and more ‘street’ than its predecessor, rigged with those fitness applications and shake music player controls last seen on the W910i.

The mid-range W580i is only Sony Ericsson’s second Walkman slider. If you’re looking for a close comparison it’s essentially a tweaked S500i dressed up in Walkman togs. Generally it feels quite solid in the hand, but the battery cover is prone to the odd creak while the soft keys are overly spongy. On the upside, the slider action is reassuringly sturdy, and it opens with a snap to reveal what looks to be a cramped keypad. But don’t fret because the arrangement is surprisingly thumb-friendly.

If you’re a fitness fanatic, the built-in pedometer is a welcome feature. Runners can track distance, average speed and time while the monitor is on default to automatically count your walking steps. If you enter your vital stats like weight, height, D.O.B and gender it can even calculate the calories you burn. But don’t get too despondent when you find out a 30 minute jog doesn’t burn of that quarter pounder you had for lunch. Your fitness progress can then be compared using the weekly breakdown of results.

Sony Ericsson T250i Review by 3G.co.uk

Sony Ericsson T250i Review by 3G.co.uk

It’s fair to say that Sony Ericsson’s presence in the bargain basement prepay market has been marginal. Even after the mega-success of its Walkman music handsets and Cyber-shot camphones, the Japanese-Scandinavian outfit has still found it difficult to break Nokia’s dominance at this level. But in an attempt to crack the monopoly, Sony Ericsson has decided to up the production values, starting with the T250i.

Sony Ericsson wants to bring quality to the lower prepay classes without wrecking the wallet and at the time of going to press, O2 and Carphone Warehouse were shifting the T250i for a mere £30. Handle the T250i and you’ll soon see that 30 quid represents a stellar bargain. While not totally convincing, its classy brushed aluminium finish and solid build still feels out of place on such a rudimentary pay-as-you-go handset.

As a member of the recently resurrected classic Tseries, its design is also smart and refined. While it’s reminiscent of Sony Ericsson’s familiar signature candybar-stylings, the simple clean lines are nevertheless quite elegant.

Naturally, for such a frill-free handset, the T250i is incredibly user-friendly. The raised buttons on the spacious keypad are highly thummable and great for speed texting. The four-way joypad also has grips for extra purchase and sports signposted shortcuts, taking you to the phone’s more popular features. When in home-screen mode you can access the camera, FM radio, contacts and the messaging menu with one click. One minor niggle is the four-way joypad forcing you to use the left soft key for making selections. Those of us weaned on a five-way arrangement may find this disorientating to begin with, but operation will soon become second nature.

New Sony Ericsson Intuitive User Interface

Ericsson launched the Ericsson Multimedia Communication Suite (MCS) - bringing to consumers popular services they already enjoy on the Internet in a new and enhanced mobile way. The intuitive user interface will be integrated into selected new Sony Ericsson devices such as the W760.

With the Ericsson MCS, mobile operators will be able to offer their customers a suite of attractive services. Consumers will be able to access new and existing services from the address book - with an interface including rich presence functionality such as avatars, photos and personal free text. The solution also keeps track of friends and their applications so consumers will always see who is available for different applications. The user has full control over what type of information is available.

The intuitive user interface integrates new MCS applications such as chat and file transfer smoothly with existing voice, video call, SMS and MMS services. Having all contacts and services available through one presence-enabled address book creates a feeling of being closer to friends and family. This stimulates new types of spontaneous communication using both existing and new services. Ericsson has learned from its consumer research that today's communication is about so much more than just making announcements: it has evolved into the sharing of everyday experiences. Presence alone with personal messages and avatars will be of great interest to many consumers supporting everyday sharing of experiences.

Ericsson MCS will initially be available for selected Sony Ericsson feature phones. In Barcelona the MCS solution will be demonstrated live on popular Sony Ericsson phones.

Sony Ericsson W960i Review by 3G.co.uk

Sony Ericsson W960i Review by 3G.co.uk

One of Sony Ericsson's major triumphs in recent times has been its success in reviving the flagging Walkman music brand and reinventing it for a new generation of younger, hipper mobile users.

Just as the manufacturer draws on its Cybershot brand in the camera space, Sony Ericsson's ability to distinguish a new music phone with the globally recognised Walkman logo is a tremendous brand advantage.

However, almost 30 years on from the launch of the first Sony Walkman cassette player, the thought of being restricted to just one album's worth of songs accessible from your music device at a time is now unthinkable. And, just to emphasise the chasm between the 1979 Walkman and the 2008 version, Sony Ericsson's new W960i Walkman phone lets you store up to 700 albums thanks to 8GB of built-in storage.

But, while bumper storage capacity is undoubtedly one of the key assets of any modern music device, it isn't everything, and every new Sony Ericsson Walkman phone is under pressure to live up to the high spec music pedigree that the Walkman range now epitomises.

As a result, the launch of the W960 Walkman phone has been met with huge anticipation and expectation. And, because they were first announced at the same time, it's natural to compare the new W960i Walkman with the W910i Walkman.

Both handsets are at the premium end of the Walkman range and are priced accordingly. But, as is always the case with technology, each handset has its own distinct assets and foibles.

For example, the W910i offers HSDPA broadband data speeds, a lightweight chassis, beautiful slider action and a fabulous user experience, but suffers from a fairly bog standard two megapixel camera and less in-built memory. Whereas the W960i is a larger, heavier candy bar phone running 3G data speeds, but offers Wi-fi, a 3.2 megapixel camera and a huge 8GB memory as standard.

So, on paper at least, there would not seem to be much between them. However, we found the W910i to be a far superior handset.

Sony Ericsson Radio Mobile Phone Range

Sony Ericsson announced the launch of two new mobile phones, the R300 Radio (right) and R306 Radio (below right), both designed to deliver a credible radio-listening experience to a global audience, and ideally suited to emerging markets such as India.

“The R300 Radio and R306 Radio allow you to tune-in to your favourite music shows or sports reports, across both AM and FM broadcasts,” said Howard Lewis, Vice President and Head of Entry Level Products at Sony Ericsson. “They certainly look and sound the part, offering a radio-inspired design and feature set on a choice of either a candy bar or clamshell phone.”

Features include:
True radio designDedicated radio speakers and preset channel buttons
Loud sound3D sound enhancement and volume boost for noisy environments
AM/FM FrequenciesTune-in to your favourite station

The R306 Radio will launch in two colours: Coffee Black and Champagne White. It is a GSM/GPRS 900/1800/1900 phone that will be available in selected markets from Q3 2008.The R306a Radio is a GSM/GPRS 850/1800/1900 phone, available in the same timeframe.

New Sony Ericsson T-Series Handsets

Sony Ericsson announced the launch of the T270(below) and T280 (below right), a stylish duo of affordably priced phones set to appeal to differing audiences.

“We have developed two phones that meet the needs of two distinct audiences,” said Howard Lewis, Vice President and Head of Entry Level products at Sony Ericsson. “The T270 and T280 build on the appeal of iconic Sony Ericsson phones like the T610. They are good looking and tick all of the right boxes; whether it’s for the business user wanting a compact work phone or the everyday user looking for a classic, stylish camera phone.”

Both of the phones announced today are designed with a clear audience in mind. For the T270 it is the business user who just wants the essentials done well. It has been purposely developed without a camera to keep things simple and is built with a metal housing and clearly laid out keypad to ensure a robust phone that is easy-to-use.

For whatever reason you need a phone – whether it is for work or just staying in touch with minimum fuss – then Sony Ericsson say that they have a solution with the T270 and T280.

The T270 and T280 will be available in the same colours, Silver on Black and Copper on Silver. They will be available in selected markets from Q1 2008.

Maria Sharapova Becomes Face of Sony Ericsson

Sony Ericsson has signed an exclusive four year sponsorship agreement with female tennis player, Maria Sharapova, to become the company’s first global brand ambassador.

The stunning and talented Russian, who turns 21 in April this year, will undertake a series of innovative new consumer brand campaigns specifically designed to engage Sony Ericsson’s core target audiences and to utilise Maria away from the tennis court.
Maria will also be working with Sony Ericsson’s design team on a range of products and accessories.

The off-court agreement complements Sony Ericsson’s 6 year $88 million global title sponsorship of the WTA Tour which was signed in January 2005 and is the biggest deal in the history of women’s sport. Sony Ericsson’s commitment to women’s tennis has energised the game by bringing fans closer to the experience and taking the sport to new audiences through cutting edge initiatives like night tennis – a fusion of tennis, fashion, music and dance.
Commenting on today’s announcement, Dee Dutta, Corporate Vice President and Head of Marketing at Sony Ericsson, said: “Now in our seventh year as a company, the brand has evolved significantly and securing a global brand ambassador is a natural progression to take our brand to the next level in an increasingly competitive market place.”

“Maria’s iconic status, determination, dynamism, success and charm match strongly with the Sony Ericsson brand, which prides itself on innovative and cool design with substance.”
“Our alignment with Maria’s global iconic status, combined with our brand expertise and innovative thinking aims to provide something new and something different to our customers around the world.”

Maria Sharapova added, “It is really exciting to be working with a cool brand like Sony Ericsson which has such a strong reputation in the entertainment industry”

“Even though most people know me as a tennis player, I have so many passions beyond the sport like fashion, music, film and design; which Sony Ericsson and I are going to be exploring together through our partnership.”
